BBC radio has done a survey that proved that parents also go through a lot of stress and worry over their children’s exams. Nearly a quarter of parents said that their mental health suffers during the exams and that they have trouble sleeping in that period. More than half of them stated that they would like to get help or advice to deal with their stress and support their kids.

So, if you are a parent feeling pressured by your children’s tests: we hear you, and we are here to help. Here are some tips that will get all of you safe and sound to a good grade.

You Can’t Help with Exams Unless You Are OK

Before you start helping your kids with exams, you need to pull yourself together. You can’t help anyone when you’re stressed and anxious. As an adult, you need to objectively observe the situation and realize that there is no exam worthy of jeopardizing your and your children’s mental health.

Also, keep in mind that anything is achievable with practice, effort, and encouragement. If you still can’t keep calm, do your best to stay composed in front of your child. If they see you anxious, they will stress out even more.

Track Their Behavior

Children often don’t know how to express their emotions with words. And if you ask them how they’re feeling about their exams, they’ll probably say that they are okay, even if that’s not true. Children will show their frustration through changed behavior. For example, they will be easily irritable, they will not be able to sleep normally, and they will have trouble enjoying the things they normally enjoy. An extreme example would be engaging in self-harming behaviors.

Communicate with Your Child

While your child might have a hard time articulating their emotions, you should be able to talk to them and share your thoughts. First of all, explain that no pressure is coming from you. Sure, you want them to perform well, but it’s not a matter of life and death. Show that you have faith in them to demonstrate responsibility and knowledge, and offer your help with studying.

Work on Study Habits

Preparing for an exam is something a lot of kids leave for a couple of days before the event. However, if they’re attentive in class, work consistently, and build study habits with pretests, the exam will cause less stress.

It’s a good idea to make a studying timetable that outlines which subjects should be covered on which days. At the end of the day and the week, review the completed material and go over it together.

Encourage Healthy Habit

Losing sleep over exams can only cause a lack of focus and memory issues. That’s why it is imperative for kids to have a consistent bedtime routine and to get between eight and nine hours of sleep each night. This should be particularly prioritized on the night before the exam. A balanced diet can also boost brain capacity and improve memory. Some of the foods that help keep children’s brains sharp include nuts, seeds, apples, plums, oatmeal, fish, eggs, and greens.

Related: Six Natural Ways To Improve Your Sleep

Give Your Child Space

While you need to watch over your kids, help them, and encourage them, children need to have their own space where they can learn and practice without distractions. This room needs to be equipped with a comfortable chair and desk, as well as all the necessary learning materials such as books, notebooks, pencils, rulers, calculators, etc. Make sure there is enough natural light in the room, but equip it with task lights (table lamps) as well.

Talk to Their Teachers

Your kid’s teacher (or teachers) will have a good grasp of their knowledge and the areas they’re struggling with. Be involved in their learning process by occasionally talking to the teachers to discover how you can help. The fact that you are interested in their education will also motivate the kids to give their best, so it’s a win-win situation.

Free Time Is Important

We’ve already mentioned creating a studying schedule that will help your kids keep up with their obligations. However, you can’t expect them to sit in their room with their noses inside books all the time. Even more than grownups, children need their free time to enjoy the things they love.

Depending on their preferences, it would be best if they spend that time socializing or just being outside. But if they really enjoy watching Youtube and playing video games, they can also do that during breaks. The most important thing is that these activities are enjoyed during set breaks and don’t interrupt studying.

Final Word

Helping our kids succeed in school is important for their self-esteem and future. However, preserving mental health is even more important. This goes for parents as well. So, make sure the entire family gives their best to create an encouraging environment for the students preparing for their exams – but also keep in mind that those are just tests.

This year has shown us that things can get unpredictable and cause chaos regardless of country, class, or language. People all over the globe have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and even though we still don’t know the final impact on our health and wellbeing, it’s safe to say that things will never be the same.

However, if there is one thing that we should all learn from this, is the importance of personal health and wellbeing. Because, only when we’re strong and healthy, we’re able to face all the uncertainty and everything that comes out of it.

Therefore, if there is anything you’d wish to take from this year, it’s the fact that caring for your health should be your priority. So, here are the top 6 tips for good health and wellbeing in 2021 that will motivate you further.

Investing in Your Health and Wellbeing Is Investing in Yourself

Once you decide to take better care of your health, you’ll realize that you’re actually investing in yourself and your future. Unfortunately, many people start to realize that only when they’re sick, and then, it’s often too late. To avoid such things, make sure to get regular health checkups from your doctor, at least once a year. That will provide you with enough time to treat any eventual problem.

Nurturing Your Mental Health Is Also an Important

In the past few months, many people experienced anxiety, depression, and trauma, due to changes related to the pandemic. So, investing in your mental health is a great gift that you could give to yourself. If you learn to be grounded and assess your situation without panic and fear, you’ll feel much better with future events.

Similarly, if this year has drained you, talking to a mental health professional can alleviate your issues and help you get back on track. If you’re looking to adopt some positive habits that can be healing to your mind, feel free to try meditation, yoga, journaling, or spending time in nature.

Learning Can Be of Great Help

Modern life can be unpredictable and sometimes downright chaotic, and 2020 has certainly made that point very clear. Therefore, having some emergency skills can be of great aid both for your career prospects and those close to you. If you’re a parent or work in childcare, you’ll feel more assured if you know how to provide CPR and deal with other life-threatening emergencies. Plus, when you learn how PALS drug algorithms work and how to implement them, you’ll have a real, actionable skillset. Knowing how to save a life and preserve health is incredibly important and surely a great investment toward a better future.

Positive Acts Will Keep You Grounded

Living through these turbulent times can be anxiety-inducing, that’s for sure. But, if you dedicate some time trying to make yourself grow, you’ll learn that doing positive things can also affect your health and wellbeing in a good way. Exercising, eating healthily, taking your meds and supplements are all good things that actually serve you and your well-being.

If you’ve been laid off from work, and you haven’t decided to look for another one yet, then use that time to take care of yourself and invest in your own future. You’ll feel better knowing that, there are some things, that are always under control.

Remember That Rest Is Okay To

For some cultures, rest is seen as a shameful sign of laziness, while in others, it’s considered as a universal human right. So if you’ve been spending a lot of hours at work, this year could teach you the importance of relaxation. You deserve to take a break and do something enjoyable that isn’t related to your place of work. Reading, watching movies, running, cooking, or just taking a nap are all joyful activities that promote your health so feel free to do them regularly.

You Will Acquire a Sense of Purpose

Sometimes, we all come to the point in life when we feel a little aimless, and if you feel like that right now, no one blames you. But, once you decide to start investing in your well-being, you’ll see that it will also give you a sense of purpose. You’ll be given a mission of sorts, because, being able to take care of yourself, will also make you a stronger, and thus, more helpful member of your community. And being able to serve your community is a huge advantage in this tumultuous period.

Conclusion

These steps are important if you want to get your life in order and enter the year 2021 feeling stronger and more empowered. Additionally, remembering to stay grounded and grateful will be of great use, as you’ll be able to face reality, and subsequently, help yourself and those around you.

7 Helpful Tips For Coping With Depression Today, many countries struggle with high depression rates because of tough economic times. Mental health disorder affects more than 264 million people around the world. It hinders people of all ages, but women tend to suffer more than men. It’s crucial to find helpful tips for coping with depression, as it could lead to suicide.

While there are many pharmacological and psychological treatments for severe and moderate depression, learning other ways to cope is vital. Strategies such as eating well, sleeping well, and exercising may help. Here are some other helpful tips for coping with depression:

Seek Help from a Support Group

A support group is one of the best ways to deal with common issues such as depression or drug addiction. That’s why NA Meetings Asheville continues to help people come together and address their concerns.

Depression-like conditions are not easy to overcome on your own. However, support groups motivate you to meet people who have successfully conquered it and are doing well in managing it. You get educational and community help to save you from relapsing into depression.

Use of Physical Exercise

Exercise improves your mental and physical health. But did you know that it offers positive effects when dealing with depression? Exercising makes you feel more energetic, sharper, and positive about yourself. Regular exercise can relieve stress and depression and enhance your mood.

Research shows that physical exercise helps in depression by keeping the mind occupied with other things. When exercising, you reduce negative thoughts. Besides, it releases good hormones, which improve your well-being when coping with depression.

Socialize with Friends and Family

Depressed individuals often feel low and lonely. They hate interacting with others and tend to keep issues to themselves. However, this behavior affects their physical and emotional health and can lead to further mental illness

It would help if you didn’t cut yourself off from the outside world. We are social beings, so it’s beneficial that you maintain healthy relationships with friends, loved ones, and families. They are an essential support network.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

A good diet plan is essential to improve your mental health when coping with depression. Eat balanced meals to help stabilize your blood sugar, which gives you the energy to carry on throughout the day.

However, reduce your consumption of simple carbohydrates, such as white flour and refined sugars. Avoiding these food choices will stabilize the blood level and, in turn, elevate your mood.

Depression levels reduce when you consume low-fat dairy products, fewer animal-based foods, olives, fish, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

On the other hand, taking a diet with high quantities of red meat, sweets, potatoes, and fewer fruits/ vegetables may worsen depression. Therefore, always focus on maintaining a healthy diet.

Eliminate Negative Thoughts

It’s a considerable challenge for depressed individuals not to give in to negative thoughts. Going through depression makes you feel like the world is over, and nothing makes sense. Eliminate such thoughts by shifting the focus of your mind to look at positive thoughts.

Positive thoughts help you to have a better view of the world. When you shift your thoughts towards positivity in your life, you will begin to feel better about your environment. Enrolling in cognitive behavioral therapy is one way to encourage positive thoughts.

One recent study shows that positive activity interventions involving thoughts such as gratitude, kindness, and positive feelings towards other people help manage depression.

Sleep Regular Hours

It’s familiar to lack sleep when coping with depression. Research shows that depressed individuals complain about insomnia or too much sleep. Thinking about your problems can hinder you from enjoying a good night’s sleep.

On the other hand, some spend the whole day just sleeping due to depression to evade their thoughts.

Enjoying up to eight hours of sleep helps improve physical health and moods and reduces depression. Sleep is as essential to our health as breathing, drinking, and eating. Inadequate sleep will lead to mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

If you have trouble falling asleep, turn off any electronics an hour before bed and sleep under dim light.

Establish a Regular Routine

It’s hard to stick to a routine when you have depression. Consequently, without a well-established method, you may probably sleep the whole day or engage in drugs. The best way to maintain focus is to devise a list of activities you can do and ensure that you accomplish them.

You can begin your morning with a short run, consume breakfast, and then fruits. You can do some house chores, visit friends, and finish office work. In the evening, you can meditate to keep your mind off your worries.

Conclusion

Depression is a challenging mental disorder that can potentially lead to fatal outcomes when you fail to manage it. Drugs prescribed for depression will only help a little, but they can become addictive and cause dependency.

These natural and helpful tips will put you at ease when coping with depression. Make sure to eat well, sleep well, seek the support of friends, and exercise. However, talk to your doctor if symptoms persist.

The weather might have been beautiful this summer, but most of us have been stuck inside. As if having summer taken away wasn’t enough, many people have lost their jobs, and social distancing has left many people with depression during COVID-19- feeling overwhelmed, lonely, and hopeless.

Even though this despair is temporary, at times, it doesn’t feel like that. We’re not sure when life will get back to normal, but in the meanwhile, dealing with it through binge-eating or drinking too much will only make that downward spiral worse. To combat those negative feelings, in the meantime we’ve come up with 6 coping mechanisms to deal with depression during COVID-19.

Find Some Form of Physical Activity

When all else fails, get the endorphins going. Although we all respond differently to depression during COVID-19, a structured home workout might make you feel good and provide a sense of routine where there is none. However, if you have trouble sourcing that motivation, an outdoor exercise like rollerblading, biking, or jogging will help invigorate you without feeling too much like a workout.

Image courtesy of Pexels, Nathan Cowley

For Depression During COVID-19 Get Outside

Instead of masking up at a crowded store and indulging in some retail therapy, do a hike with a rewarding view. Or, even just lay out in the sun on a blanket with a good book, if you don’t feel like being active. Soaking in Vitamin D and being around nature can help you release that internalized anxiety or depression and provide a healthy distraction, along with a real reminder to stay grounded.

Seek Out Sources of Familiarity and Comfort

Maybe it’s your mom’s Mac and cheese recipe, reruns of The Office, or some Youtube clips that make you laugh while you’re in the state of depression during COVID-19. It could just be snuggling up with your pet, or listening to your favorite songs. This act is kind of like hugging yourself. Remind yourself of the tiny moments of enjoyment in life, and the big picture won’t seem so overwhelming.

Connect with Others in a Genuine Way

Catching up over small talk can help you meet your daily quota of human interaction, but is it connecting with someone? During COVID-19 use your support network and get your loved ones to listen to your struggles when you’re experiencing depression. Opening up and being vulnerable is never easy, but it is incredibly courageous to do and makes it feel more comfortable to reach out for help the next time. Opening up about your troubles does not make you a burden – it deepens your bond.

Eat Mood-Enhancing Foods For Depression During COVID-19

While eating comfort food or McDonald’s might make you feel right at the moment, you’ll crash eventually and feel even worse than you did. Try to consume healthy and fresh foods filled with omega-3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients. Think roasted salmon and wild berry salad. It still sounds pretty decadent to us!

Staying informed is essential, but so is taking care of your mental health and taking a break. Consider unplugging from social media and the news at least a couple of times a week, so that you don’t start obsessively checking for updates. There’s loads of misinformation out there, and educating yourself with it will breed even more misinformed fear. You can always check conspiracy theories on Snopes.

Battling depression during COVID-19 can be difficult to manage. Recognizing the “triggers” will help you make the lifestyle changes that are required to get you out of those “blues”.

With the lockdown and social distancing rules, it’s getting increasingly difficult to stay active. Changes that are disrupting your routine can affect your mental health. We will explore 5 ways exercise can benefit your mental health.

In these extraordinary circumstances, we need to invest even more effort and creativity into staying healthy and resilient. Exercise remains the most powerful ally in this pursuit, as it’s one of the most effective strategies that help you stay healthy both physically and mentally.

Build up Your Confidence

Physical accomplishments are as impressive as those of your intellect. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to appreciate your physical output. You can undoubtedly commend yourself on all the challenges you overcome to reach your weekly training milestones. Staying active can not only build up your confidence, but it can impact your mental health too.

Amplified Energy Levels

Photo: Georgie Cobbs/Unsplash

You might think that adding more exercise to your schedule will only make you feel exhausted. The opposite is exact! Regular training and physical activity allow you to fight fatigue, sluggishness, and energy levels. Exercise boosts your immune system, strength, and stamina, increasing your energy levels over time. In the current situation, however, many people lack the much-needed zeal to stick to their training routine.

Including exercise into your daily life can benefit not only your energy levels but also your mental health.

Following in the footsteps of many versed athletes, you can buy the best whey protein online and use them to amplify your energy levels for your workout.
Reducing Stress and Anxiety Will Have a Big Impact on Your Mental Health

Your increased heart rate during exercise, paired with the influx of happy hormones such as endorphins, helps your brain beat stress and tension that builds up every day. On a chemical level, your workouts give you the whole brain and mood boost to start your day on a positive, self-affirming note. Reducing stress and anxiety can have a significant impact on your mental health.

On a more psychological level, sticking to your workout routine allows you to realize that you’re overcoming obstacles through your training every day. Every time you push through a challenging set and move your boundaries just a little bit, you’re actively improving your endurance and strength, and your mental resilience, too. Workouts aren’t just a reflection of your physical fitness. They show that you’re willing to go outside your comfort zone and work on yourself. That alone is an authoritative source of inspiration to banish stress and feel more empowered than ever.

When processed foods surround you, getting inspired to eat healthily can be challenging. Fast food, the mere option of takeout, and other convenient eating solutions, it’s all too easy to lose motivation to stick to your nutrient-dense eating regime. Building healthy habits can be difficult, especially when you try to establish them separately. However, when you introduce regular workouts, you’re already vested enough to start adapting your diet.

As your body changes, when you shed fat and build lean muscle, you’ll feel more inspired to clean up your menu. Making healthier and self-care decisions is another reflection of self-love, and another step towards a healthy attitude towards your mental health. The food you eat will, in turn, fuel you with more energy and positivity, so the benefits are double when it comes to eating well thanks to your training routine.

Sleep Quality

Photo: Ale Romo Photography/ Unsplash

To balance your hormones, regulate your stress levels, and have enough energy, you need sleep quality, and consistently so. When you spend most of your time passive and without any physical or mental stimulation, your body gets restless. Making your sleeping patterns become more erratic, and the overall quality of your downtime is compromised. Exercise helps regulate all of these issues simply because when you stay active and get tired just enough, your circadian rhythm will become more balanced.

However, it’s important to avoid working out too late in the evening and just before bedtime. Light stretching and breathing exercises are the right choices, but intense workouts should be scheduled earlier in the day.

Your mental health depends on a slew of different factors, and they all heavily depend on how active you are. We might have adapted over time to lead predominantly sedentary lives, but that is by no means an excuse to avoid physical activity. On the contrary, for those wanting to feel better in their skin, have more energy, regulate their mood and stress levels, and become more resilient, exercise is the critical component in achieving all of those goals. Don’t shy away from being active at home or finding ways to incorporate more physical activity during the pandemic – use your creativity, and you’ll see how your wellbeing responds to your efforts and how exercise can benefit your mental health.

The 1985 classic Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is fun not only because of its indisputable comedy and excellent acting crew but also because of its fun-packed cross-country journey. It merely makes you feel good about your life. And imagine if you were the hero of the story (only without the stolen cherry-red vintage Schwinn)…

Besides the obvious physical benefits, cycling brings a bunch of mental health perks onto the table, especially when you approach it as an adventure rather than a chore. So, here’s a suggestion: why wouldn’t you cycle your way through America and discover some of the best bike trails in the country? Here’s how it can help boost your mental and physical health.

Pedaling to a Better Mood

A 2012 study included volunteers pedaling stationary bikes while observing videos of a green, leafy cycling trail. The results showed that the volunteers are experiencing less negative thoughts and a better overall mood. Other studies also dealt with outdoor physical activities such as cycling and showed that they could reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The combination of being active and spending time in nature can’t be bad for you, but the degree of positivity you’ll experience depends on numerous factors. That’s why it would be best not to take our word for it – try it yourself!

Empowering Your Brain

Practicing a motor skill, such as riding a bike, helps maintain the integrity of white matter in the brain. This means improved connectivity and better cognitive abilities. It also has a beneficial effect on a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which creates new neurons and maintains the existing ones. This protects you from various neurological conditions.

In general, aerobic exercise is beneficial for the brain because it maintains optimal blood flow to the brain and supplies the brain with oxygen and nutrients. To translate, cycling makes your mind sharp and your memory just right.

Practicing Mindfulness

If you cycle regularly, you probably know the feeling when you’re on some of the best bike trails, with a gentle breeze in your face, the road ahead, and your mind clear. Many people have associated this feeling with meditation. And indeed, cycling enables you to be fully aware of the present moment and experience clarity, positivity, and inner peace. The benefits of meditation are multiple. While we’re still waiting for indisputable scientific confirmation, some studies are confirming that meditation improves concentration, awareness, and memory.

Weight Loss and Fitness

Promoting weight loss, building muscle, and improving fitness are just some of the perks of getting on your ride and hitting the bike trails throughout the country. Your body burns between 400 and 1000 calories in just an hour of cycling. Your calves, quads, hamstrings, and glutes will be as tight as they can be. A study by the Healthy Air Campaign showed that the lungs of a cyclist operate better than those of a driver. Finally, all those bike rides will have an incredible effect on your immune system and heart health. So, if you’re struggling with embarking on the weight loss journey, I hope these benefits help you choose your way.

Best Bike Trails in America

So, if you want to achieve mindfulness, boost brain function, work on your physical fitness, and all that while you are exploring the most beautiful sceneries of your country, you need to explore the best bike trails in America and choose the one you’d enjoy the most – or perhaps try them all out when you get the time. Here are a couple of excellent options to consider:

One of the longest and the most interesting is the Southern Delaware Heritage Bike Trail. It features 130 miles of local roads and incredible views.

There is also The Silver Comet Trail, which is entirely paved and offers the chance to see pinelands and a historic trestle.

The Natchez Trace Parkway leads from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee (444 miles), so it’s not your average trail, but the wooded acreages and beautiful farmlands make the road feel far shorter than it is.

Of course, these are just a select few, and there are nearly 50,000 miles of bike-friendly trails in the U. S.

With the constant commotion of daily lives, we cannot help being succumbed by some stressful situations. From job obligations and work-related agitation to minor daily challenges, stress has simply become a part of life. If you get entangled with your worries and not do something that will help you let loose and feel at ease, your state may accumulate and worsen, and then stress could even lead to some severe illnesses. The key is to get active and stay in motion for stress relief. Doing some form of physical activity will shift your focus to mindful thinking and make you will more serene, energetic, and your old self. Numerous activities can help you relieve stress, and here are the most effective ones.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a well-know Chinese martial art that involves doing slow movements with a focus on deep breathing. It is also often called a ‘meditation in motion’ since it automatically relaxes your muscles, and promotes the focus on the mental absorption of mundane daily worries. However, one of the most crucial and practical benefits of tai chi is its superb ability to reduce stress and anxiety levels through those slow movements. What is more, if you implement a habit of practicing tai chi regularly, you will improve your flexibility, boost energy levels, and have a more restful sleep, all of which are contributing to tranquil mental stability. Moreover, this is a rather safe and inexpensive activity which you can practice wherever you are.

Yoga

Practicing yoga daily is like doing total detoxification of your entire organism. Yoga is a fantastic mindful activity that not only helps you relieve stress, but it can reduce blood pressure, make you more mentally healthy, psychologically stable, and physically fit. While doing yoga, you are incorporating light exercise with relaxing physical movement, controlled breathing, and meditation. All of those activities provide excellent stress relief from all the things that have been troubling yours. Some yoga postures might be demanding as they enhance strength and stamina, while others utilize deep breathing techniques that enable your muscles to calm. You only need to find a perfect balance between the relaxation postures and intense training.

Martial Arts

There is no doubt that good boxing or Muay Thai session can help you release all the negative tension that has been piling up. You can easily let all your worries out on the mats or in the ring while breaking a sweat. It is a known fact that stress is the fundamental cause of more than 6 percent of all human illness, and if you require a productive and forceful stress reliever, then you should try martial arts. As martial arts represent a great way to break the tension out by doing hard and strong physical movements and cardio workouts, you might want to get the most quality ankle supports to protect your ankles, joints, and wrists from potential injuries. These sports may have a higher risk of damages, so you had better search for some sites to find the best equipment on the market.

Brisk walking

Any physical activity triggers the release of endorphins that stimulate relaxation and relieve pain. And the higher levels of endorphins, the calmer you will feel. If you are not much of a sporty type or you simply don’t prefer doing exercises, there is one physical activity that can still boost the release of endorphins and helps you relieve stress, and that is walking. Brisk walking includes faster and more agile movements, but you don’t need to push hard. Actually, by walking around the neighborhood, or anywhere else on fresh air, you can equally decrease anxiety levels and enhance the positive state of mind just as if you have spent an hour in a gym. Invite a friend and family to join you in brisk walking. Social support form loved one’s lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and improves stress resilience.

Cycling

If you spend a lot of time indoors, surrounded by unadorned walls, you will experience stress at one point in your life. If you have to commute to work every day, you may substitute cycling over driving. Going for a bike ride instead of driving a car is proven to be a fruitful de-stressing activity. Many people don’t show up to work because they are under stress, and the best way to avoid that feeling is to get up on your bike. The benefits are innumerable. You are always out on fresh air, you are getting some active adrenaline boost, and when you turn your pedals, you begin to get your blood pumping. Thus you are enhancing your mood and feeling happier.

Meditation

Any form of physical movement does your body good.
