Breathing is a vital process that our body performs non-stop, and proper breathing makes all the difference. This process is repeated between 17,000 and 30,000 times every day for as long as a person is alive. We can go without food or water for long periods, but not without oxygen.

We bring oxygen into our cells when we breathe, which reacts with molecules and extracts energy from that reaction. We get carbon dioxide as a byproduct of that reaction. We usually think of carbon dioxide as bad, but we don’t comprehend that it serves a purpose. It breaks the bond between hemoglobin and oxygen, traveling further.

When we hyperventilate (that is, over breathe), we expel too much carbon dioxide and end up with low oxygen levels because it remains bonded to hemoglobin. An interesting fact is that more than 95% of people over breathe.

With this in mind, we can see that very few of us breathe in a way that’s natural and genuinely beneficial for the human body. Here, we’ll go over everything to know about proper breathing and why it’s crucial for your overall health.

What is Proper Breathing?

The first thing you’re probably wondering is, “Am I breathing properly?”

Well, fortunately, there’s a simple exercise to put that to the test:

Place your right hand on your chest and your left hand on your stomach while lying down.

Take a deep breath through your nose and count to four. Which hand moves first?

If it’s your left hand, you’re doing it correctly, as your stomach, rather than the chest, is expanding during the inhale.

When you’re exhaling, you want your right hand to be the first to go down.

This way, you’re absorbing all of the oxygen (rather than taking shallow breaths from your chest) and storing it at the bottom of your lungs. You can do breathing exercises to help you relieve stress and get in the habit of breathing correctly. One interesting technique you can try is Buteyko breathing, which helps improve breathing quality, reduce asthma symptoms, and even repair chronic congestion.

Signs of Poor Breathing

We usually associate poor breathing with feelings of anxiety and being upset, as well as panic attacks, but there’s more to it than that. Poor breathing usually involves:

Holding your breath

Feeling short of breath

Feeling the need to take a long breath

Running out of breath

Taking lots of short breaths

Even though all of these can be linked to our emotions, other factors are at play.

Some of it is a result of our way of life. We squeeze our lungs if we are always sitting and are slouched over our desks and laptops, making it difficult to breathe deeply. Instead, we’re taking short, shallow breaths.

Or we don’t exercise enough, mainly cardio, which forces us to breathe correctly.

Likewise, when we are constantly stressed and tense, it’s easy to fall into the habit of taking short breaths all the time.

One piece of advice for avoiding poor breathing is to breathe as much as possible via your nose. Your mouth lacks natural barriers to microorganisms, but your nose has them.

Benefits of Proper Breathing

Proper breathing has numerous advantages for your overall health. For example:

You get stronger and healthier.

Endorphins are released in more significant quantities, promoting sensations of natural well-being.

Your muscles will relax.

The heart rate and blood pressure both drop.

It helps you manage your emotions and concerns so that you don’t give rise to excessive worry, stress, and feelings of panic.

Deep inhaling and exhaling is a sort of natural cleansing process, helping you direct your energy more constructively.

You’ll have a sharper and more focused mind.

Proper breathing helps you ground yourself at the moment to feel alive and present.

If you take a few deep breaths before going to bed, you’ll get a better night’s sleep.

One of the critical advantages of proper breathing is improved physical performance and endurance.

Proper Breathing In Closing

Proper breathing can help you with various physical and mental health issues. It isn’t a universal solution to everything that’s bothering you, but it’s a potent tool for helping you face and handle all of life’s challenges in a calm, confident way. Just remember that you need to practice it regularly (daily) to have the best results, like with anything else. So, take a deep breath and get started right away.

If you’ve ever seen Reese Witherspoon’s Wild, you’ve likely spent at least one evening wondering what it would be like to go on a solo hiking trip. And while we can’t all be Cheryl Strayed, hiking on your own can definitely be the experience of a lifetime. However, as with any other solo trip, there are certain precautions and measures to be taken. With that in mind, take a look at our girls’ guide on solo hiking for women.

Choose the Right Trail for Your Solo Hiking

The most important consideration when going on a solo hiking trip, without a doubt, will be choosing the right trail. Be completely honest with yourself and determine your hiking skills and your fitness levels. When hiking alone, you can’t always count on help to be readily available, so you need to be quite sure you can get to a shelter each evening.

You should also research the best trails for women hiking alone and choose a safe and well-frequented one.

Research Your Trails in Advance

You will also need to make sure you understand the trail before getting there. Study your maps, watch videos of others who have completed the trails already, and read blogs about them. Gather as much information as you can before heading out on your solo hiking trip.

This will help you get out of any tight spots. For instance, you may know that there is a shelter or a clearing up ahead, so you’ll push on to it at the end of a long day instead of camping on some rough terrain.

Know What to Pack

Packing for a solo hiking trip will be the second most important consideration. You want to make sure you have everything you need but also that you don’t overpack and make it hard for yourself to carry the load.

Once you compile a list of the items you think you will need, take a hike around town with your full pack and see how you get on. If it’s too much, you will need to cut back.

Just make sure that a satellite phone, a first aid kit, and a beacon and flashlight stay in there.

Understand Your Equipment

You need to be perfectly sure that you know how to use every piece of equipment, from the phone and the first aid kit to your stove and water disinfectant. Don’t just read the instruction manual and assume you’ll get it right. Test everything out, and make sure you know how to troubleshoot your basic items as well.

Train for Solo Hiking Beforehand

If you are under the impression that hiking is just walking, think again. Yes, it is largely moving your feet across a path, but don’t forget the weight, incline, and uneven road.

Don’t head out for a couple of days’ hiking without having taken a shorter hike on your own first. Your body will need to adjust to being out in the open. Help it ease in, as opposed to throwing it in the deep end.

Understand the Mental Challenges of Solo Hiking

Hiking is largely a question of your mental state, especially when you’re doing it completely on your own. When you are alone, there’s nothing to distract you, and your thoughts can quickly get the better of you. So, make sure you understand the challenges ahead.

No solo hiking trip will ever be easy, at least not all the time. There will be rough weather to overcome, and there will certainly be moments when you feel alone and lonely. You will also be tired and cold and tired and hot. The mere fact of accepting these difficulties will help a lot.

Take Good Care of Yourself

You’ll need to push yourself on your hike, but you should never put your fitness or your health at risk. This is why understanding your physical and mental limits is so important. You want to overcome your fears, but you don’t want to break yourself on the trail.

The importance of eating and drinking enough on a solo hiking trip can’t be stressed enough. Even if you don’t actually feel hungry, make sure you fuel your body for the challenges ahead.

Don’t Be Afraid to Join a Group

Finally, even if you’ve set out on a solo hiking trip, don’t prevent yourself from joining a group here and there. You may not want to hike with them all the way, but sometimes it’s good to have a bit of company, even if it’s just at mealtimes.

Try to join groups of women or mixed groups. While it does sound a bit irrational, you want to make sure you feel perfectly safe, so don’t be afraid to refuse an invitation from a group of men. Most experienced hikers will understand where you are coming from perfectly.

Final Thoughts on Solo Hiking

If you want to go on a solo hiking trip but are afraid of the challenge, start small and take a day hike around the area you live. It will soon give you the confidence you need to tackle some of the longest trails in the world.

Life knows how to make things complicated for us. It throws us various challenges, and sometimes, there’s nothing we can do to overcome them. Fortunately, however, there are still many things we can control when it comes to a happier and healthier life.

We can change our habits, improve our sleep, carefully consider what we eat, be physically active, and so on. In return, our efforts will be rewarded with happiness and a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some things you can do in this rewarding process of self-improvement.

Sleep More and Sleep Better for a Healthier Life

The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep for a healthy adult. The general recommendations should only be observed as guidelines. Depending on your specific needs, your body can require more time to consolidate memories and get the needed rest.

Keep in mind that it’s not just quantity but also the quality of sleep that counts. If you are constantly waking up during the night and if you sleep in an uncomfortable position, getting the full nine hours of sleep won’t help you feel rested. The essential factor for getting quality sleep is finding a supportive mattress that suits your sleeping habits and positions.

Change Your Diet

Poor diet choices are causing many health issues, but they can also affect your mood. The irony is that what we call ‘comfort food’ can actually make us more aggravated and sad.

In the long run, it would be better for your health and wellbeing to avoid (as much as you can) deep-fried and processed meals and turn to healthier alternatives. A balanced diet entails a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Complement it with whole grains and wholesome sources of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Some of the things to eat more frequently are leafy greens, nuts, salmon, kale, lentils, and grilled chicken.

Be Active for a Healthier Life

According to the CDC, physical activity can have many benefits both for your mental and physical health. Some of them can be immediate, while others come over time. For example, you will feel less anxious and your cognitive abilities will improve after a moderate or vigorous workout. If you exercise on a regular basis, the risk of depression and anxiety will decrease, you will sleep better, and you will be happier.

As for the physical aspect, exercising will help you maintain a healthy weight (or lose weight), decrease the risk of heart disease, strengthen your bones and muscles, and boost your immune system.

Keep Stress Under Control

Other than exercising, other things can help you keep stress under control. For example:

Deep breathing techniques can help you calm down in a stressful situation and deal with any future stressors.

When faced with stress, your muscles become tense, so you can also try relaxing them by stretching or taking a hot shower.

Practicing yoga can help you adopt a more mindful approach and patiently deal with stressors.

When you feel overwhelmed, share your problems and thoughts with someone. That can be a friend, a family member, or a therapist.

Socialize

We often sacrifice our social life due to work and household responsibilities. While being alone is good for you sometimes, being lonely never is. Humans are social beings by their nature, and even the most introverted among us require social contact.

Face-to-face contact is essential for good health, as it releases neurotransmitters that help you battle stress and anxiety. It also boosts your brain health and can make you very happy.

However, this doesn’t mean that you have to be social at all costs. It’s normal that you don’t enjoy being in some people’s company. Naturally, you’ll want to avoid the people that stress you out or simply make you feel uneasy. Find time to spend with the people you love and feel pleasant being around.

Be Kind to Yourself

Finally, find some time for yourself. Doing the things you love is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

You can spend that time as you wish – by reading a book, binge-watching a TV show, dancing, practicing a hobby. This can be replenishing and invigorating. Don’t make compromises when it comes to nourishing both your mind and body. Being kind to yourself also means forgiving yourself for the mistakes – small and big ones.

In Closing for a Happier and Healthier Life

We only spend a certain amount of time on this planet, so why wouldn’t we use it in the best way possible? Why wouldn’t we be healthy and happy while we’re here?
These tips will help you live a full life and face all the challenges ahead – and there will be a lot of them. Remember, cultivating good habits is not enough; you also need to get rid of the bad ones – so take it one step at a time.

BBC radio has done a survey that proved that parents also go through a lot of stress and worry over their children’s exams. Nearly a quarter of parents said that their mental health suffers during the exams and that they have trouble sleeping in that period. More than half of them stated that they would like to get help or advice to deal with their stress and support their kids.

So, if you are a parent feeling pressured by your children’s tests: we hear you, and we are here to help. Here are some tips that will get all of you safe and sound to a good grade.

You Can’t Help with Exams Unless You Are OK

Before you start helping your kids with exams, you need to pull yourself together. You can’t help anyone when you’re stressed and anxious. As an adult, you need to objectively observe the situation and realize that there is no exam worthy of jeopardizing your and your children’s mental health.

Also, keep in mind that anything is achievable with practice, effort, and encouragement. If you still can’t keep calm, do your best to stay composed in front of your child. If they see you anxious, they will stress out even more.

Track Their Behavior

Children often don’t know how to express their emotions with words. And if you ask them how they’re feeling about their exams, they’ll probably say that they are okay, even if that’s not true. Children will show their frustration through changed behavior. For example, they will be easily irritable, they will not be able to sleep normally, and they will have trouble enjoying the things they normally enjoy. An extreme example would be engaging in self-harming behaviors.

Communicate with Your Child

While your child might have a hard time articulating their emotions, you should be able to talk to them and share your thoughts. First of all, explain that no pressure is coming from you. Sure, you want them to perform well, but it’s not a matter of life and death. Show that you have faith in them to demonstrate responsibility and knowledge, and offer your help with studying.

Work on Study Habits

Preparing for an exam is something a lot of kids leave for a couple of days before the event. However, if they’re attentive in class, work consistently, and build study habits with pretests, the exam will cause less stress.

It’s a good idea to make a studying timetable that outlines which subjects should be covered on which days. At the end of the day and the week, review the completed material and go over it together.

Encourage Healthy Habit

Losing sleep over exams can only cause a lack of focus and memory issues. That’s why it is imperative for kids to have a consistent bedtime routine and to get between eight and nine hours of sleep each night. This should be particularly prioritized on the night before the exam. A balanced diet can also boost brain capacity and improve memory. Some of the foods that help keep children’s brains sharp include nuts, seeds, apples, plums, oatmeal, fish, eggs, and greens.

Related: Six Natural Ways To Improve Your Sleep

Give Your Child Space

While you need to watch over your kids, help them, and encourage them, children need to have their own space where they can learn and practice without distractions. This room needs to be equipped with a comfortable chair and desk, as well as all the necessary learning materials such as books, notebooks, pencils, rulers, calculators, etc. Make sure there is enough natural light in the room, but equip it with task lights (table lamps) as well.

Talk to Their Teachers

Your kid’s teacher (or teachers) will have a good grasp of their knowledge and the areas they’re struggling with. Be involved in their learning process by occasionally talking to the teachers to discover how you can help. The fact that you are interested in their education will also motivate the kids to give their best, so it’s a win-win situation.

Free Time Is Important

We’ve already mentioned creating a studying schedule that will help your kids keep up with their obligations. However, you can’t expect them to sit in their room with their noses inside books all the time. Even more than grownups, children need their free time to enjoy the things they love.

Depending on their preferences, it would be best if they spend that time socializing or just being outside. But if they really enjoy watching Youtube and playing video games, they can also do that during breaks. The most important thing is that these activities are enjoyed during set breaks and don’t interrupt studying.

Final Word

Helping our kids succeed in school is important for their self-esteem and future. However, preserving mental health is even more important. This goes for parents as well. So, make sure the entire family gives their best to create an encouraging environment for the students preparing for their exams – but also keep in mind that those are just tests.

How good are you at letting yourself reach new heights? Do you practice self-love? Or do you, like all of us do, sometimes, revert to self-sabotaging behaviors just when you’re on the brink of achieving something amazing?

If personal growth is high on your list of goals for 2021, then learning ways to let yourself bloom this spring definitely deserves a spot on your master to-do list.

Here are four easy things you can start doing right now. They will, inevitably, help you be happier, healthier, and more likely to reach your full potential.

Learn to Listen

Somewhere, while becoming obsessed with attaining #goals, professional or personal, we have collectively managed to lose track of what really matters. Ambition, the need for external validation, and societal pressure have forced us to start prioritizing the wrong things.

In reality, we should have learned how to accept individuality instead.

But the good thing is, it is never too late to turn over a new leaf. And, taking the first steps can be quite easy. All you need to do is take a pause and listen.

When faced with a decision, stop for a moment. What is your intuition telling you? Are there any positive or negative feelings you’re detecting? How do you feel physically – ready for a challenge or in need of a break?

Listening to the signals from your body and mind might be one of the essential skills you learn this spring. Besides, it could help you identify and attain your goals by teaching you how to prioritize the things that bring joy.

Do Whatever Makes You Bloom

“A flower blossoms for its own joy.” ― Oscar Wilde

How often do you treat yourself? Perhaps it’s cooking your favorite comfort foods. Or, it could be taking a day off work to do nothing but chill. Either way, finding ways to make yourself happy is a big step towards reaching your best self.

Of course, that doesn’t mean allowing procrastination. Or giving up on something just because it takes hard work. (Yes, procrastination is a form of self-sabotage. As well as a signal to stop for some introspection.) Instead, it means finding small or big ways to boost your mood, to find some inspiration, or motivate yourself to go the extra mile.

If you take up any projects, hobbies, or long-term plans this year, make sure that they spark joy. Or, if there’s something you simply have to do, make your best attempt to find that joy in it. It can be anything: the happiness of a loved one, a positive career outcome in the future, or the opportunity to learn something new.

Mens Sana In Corpore Sano

I have always been a strong proponent of the fact that physical and emotional wellbeing leads to prosperity and happiness. Even though I need constant reminding to actually practice self-care.

However, I know that if I want to set myself up for success, I need to take great care of my body and mind. For me, this means:

Waking up early, which I usually struggle with, so that I can do my 20-minute morning yoga

Sticking to a (mainly) healthy and balanced diet so that I don’t pay the price for overindulging in sugar or simple carbs

Giving myself at least one day off per week because I’m prone to overworking myself

Keeping to all my doctors and therapist appointments because prevention and maintenance beat all cures

I do all this (which is not that much, to be honest) because I know it is the key to being in prime physical and emotional shape to take on challenges. And, of course, being challenged is the only way to move forward.

Shift Your Mindset

Finally, there is one last thing you can do to ensure you bloom this spring (or any other time, for that matter). It is to do away with high expectations, self-criticism, perfectionist tendencies, and just let yourself do the best you can at that given moment.

While it may not seem like it, failure is a part of everyone’s life – be it personal or professional. But, instead of berating yourself for not living up to someone else’s (or your own) expectations, learn to accept failure as a learning opportunity.

Maybe that missed deadline can teach you how to better organize your workflow next time. Or, a failed recipe might point out the cooking skills you still need to perfect. Even something as difficult as the end of a relationship can be the event that helps us turn over a new leaf and teach us how to take better care of our needs next time.

Final Thoughts

Everyone has a different path in life. Some people are born with a positive mindset and a happy-go-lucky outlook on life. Others, on the other hand, sweat the small stuff, expecting themselves to consistently do better.

But the thing is, absolutely anyone can bloom, no matter what life stage they’re at. The only requirement? Self-belief and a good dose of self-care. And, fortunately for all of us, it’s never too late to learn either of those.

For most of 2020, I’ve sat cooped up in my home. Unable to go out and explore, I dreamt of faraway destinations, inspiring events, meeting people. Then, as time progressed, I realized that even a walk to the nearby park brought that rush of excitement about getting to do something different.

Now that we’ve made it past that year and we enter 2021, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to appear. With borders opening up and solutions to the pandemic finally becoming available, I know it won’t be long before we’re all allowed to travel again. Still, I’m left with a thought that’s been running through my head for some time now:

Why do people love to travel?

Related: 7 Ways Travel Can Improve Your Health and Happiness

What is it that draws people to travel to foreign lands that appeals to us so much?

The History of Tourism

For centuries, travel had been a luxury to ordinary people. A pastime reserved for the powerful and rich, making long journeys was the stuff of dreams for so many who could barely afford a trip to the next town.

But the 20th century changed all that. As transportation became cheaper and people’s incomes rose, suddenly, almost everyone could afford to go on holiday.

We started flocking to exotic beaches, hard-to-reach mountaintops, and ancient cities that gave birth to old civilizations. What had once been a fantasy we could only indulge through travel literature was suddenly a reality anyone could partake in.

And we love it, to say the least.

The tourism industry is one of the leading contributors to the global economy, with 9.25 trillion USD made in 2019. UK residents made more than 93 million overseas visits the same year and took an average of 3.9 holidays per person, abroad or domestically.

But while there’s no question about our willingness to explore the world, my question still remains. Why do we do it?

The Motivation to Travel

There are numerous reasons anyone could list regarding why they travel. Someone will tell you they want to see the world. Others want to meet new people. Some seek adventure, some look for solitude.

But perhaps there’s one thing in common to all travelers, wanderers, nomads, and adventurers. Maybe it’s not really new places that we’re all looking for in far off places. Just maybe, it’s the imminent self-discovery that comes with finding ourselves in a novel setting.

You see, whether you prefer to travel solo or as part of a group, stay a single day or an entire year, you’re making a huge step. And the relevant unit of measure isn’t distance. Instead, it’s how far it takes you out of your comfort zone.

There are very few things as beneficial to the human spirit than going further than before. And if reaching beyond our zone of comfort allows us to grow, then it is, ultimately, what we’re meant to be doing in the first place.

What better way to learn than by getting in touch with the world around us? How do we become a better person if not by opening ourselves up to the reality of others? Is there a better way to get inspired than to see everything that’s already out there? And of course, what better way to prove to ourselves that we can do anything than to set out on a journey into the unknown?

But the thing that I love the most about travel, and what I keep discovering over and over, is that I don’t have to go to an exotic destination to get the benefits. My 2020 trips to the nearest park were just as fulfilling as my most exotic adventures. And that’s because new experiences and new points of view are all around us. All we have to do is open ourselves up to them.

My Travel Plans for 2021

I imagine it’s no surprise that one of my biggest goals for this year is to get away as often as possible. I don’t think I’m mistaken in thinking that many people will want to go back to exploring the world at the first opportunity they get.

But, what’s changed for me this year is that I know my trips won’t just be for the sake of going someplace new. Instead, I now understand that every single journey I take offers something more. And that’s the opportunity to learn, to understand, and, ultimately, to thrive.

Freedom is a concept we often take for granted in the western world. We believe we are free – and in many ways, we certainly are. However, how often do we consider our personal freedom? How much are we holding ourselves back and preventing ourselves from becoming the best versions of the humans we are? Let’s explore what it is we can do to set ourselves free in 2021.

Freedom Allows You to Know Who You Are

The first step in achieving personal freedom is to know who we truly are. And this is not a realization that comes easily or quickly or that is ever set in stone. We fluctuate, we change and grow, and we become different (hopefully better) people as we age. However, some things hold practically from cradle to grave.

These are the realizations about yourself you want to focus on. Who are you deep down? Are you a cheerful person, or more of a melancholy person? Do you prefer to spend time alone, or in a group of people?

There’s no right or wrong answer. Simply knowing who you really are will help you anticipate your own reactions and be able to predict what you want and don’t want in your life.

Related: Self-Love: Be Kind to Yourself

Know What You Believe in

Coming to terms with your personal set of values is another step on the road to freedom. This might be a bit of a bumpier road, but with a whole lot of honesty and some soul searching, you can get through to the other side.

You may find that your core values do not correspond to those of your family or community. However, as long as they don’t violate basic commandments and don’t go against the rest of humanity, you should allow yourself the freedom to embrace them.

Set Your Goals

Knowing where you want to go in life is sometimes the best way to acquire a sense of freedom. Granted, there is also a school of thought that believes we don’t need to keep chasing goals to feel happy or fulfilled in our lives. And that is true, to an extent.

Your goal may be to be a happy person. You don’t have to set a goal that involves an achievement the outside world would applaud. Something as simple as working on your bad sleep habits can be a goal worth pursuing.

Of course, you may be the kind of person who thrives on attainable, external goals. In that case, all you really have to do is align them with the person you are and the values you hold dear.

Learn to Notice When You Are Not Being Authentic

Even the most composed and centered individuals can act in ways that are not authentic to their true selves. The outside world will try to impose itself on you practically at all times. Reacting in an inauthentic way is only to be expected, and it’s nothing to be held against you.

Instead of feeling upset with yourself when this happens, teach yourself to recognize when you are being inauthentic. When you notice this has happened, take some time to analyze your reactions, thoughts, and behavior after the event, and figure out what has triggered you.

That way, you will be able to notice the changes in yourself sooner the next time you find yourself in a similar situation, and you’ll be able to react with more authenticity.

Abandon Perfection

The notion that perfection is attainable and something to aspire to is probably one of the most ingrained beliefs that are preventing you from setting yourself truly free.

Our societies are often obsessed with it. And yet, the concept itself should be enough to signal to us that it’s not actually a worthy goal.

Let go of your quest for perfection, and devote yourself to a quest for freedom and authenticity instead. That quest will not only be attainable but also lead to fulfillment, unlike your forlorn attempt at being perfect.

Final Thoughts

Setting yourself truly free will not happen in 2021 – especially if you’re only now setting off on this journey.

Patience, perseverance, and a broader perspective will help you get there. So instead of expecting life to change overnight, invest in the small steps that lead to victory.

The human body can withstand between eight and 21 days without food. We need food to get the energy to function properly, but the relationship between the body and food is far more complex than that. Our bodies react differently to different types of food, and naturally, quantity plays a role. These factors impact weight and health, so many people decide to take on a specific diet to lose weight or improve health. Showing that you love your body through the food you eat shows that you care about your health and express love for your body. But how can you do that without undergoing a strict diet and refraining from delicious food? Let’s have a look.

Related: 4 Ways to Lead a Healthy Lifestyle

Listen to Your Body

When you’re hungry, your body sends you signals you learn to recognize from a young age. The signals are telling you that your body needs to be refueled. When you ignore them (maybe because you’re too busy or on a strict diet), your body gets confused, and the signals become stronger. The signs you should pay attention to are lightheadedness, irritability, and lack of focus. All of them can impact your mood and, later on, your general health.

The bottom line is that you should eat whenever you feel hungry. Your body tells you when to eat and when to snack. If you know that it is not the time to take a full meal, consider grabbing a healthy snack until lunch/dinner. If you experience cravings right before bedtime, don’t ruin your sleep with junk and sugary foods – instead, grab some healthy late-night snacks that support good sleep.

Are You Really Hungry, or Is It Something Else?

While you should eat when you’re feeling hungry and trust your body when it tells you it needs fuel, it’s also important to ask yourself why you want to eat. Are you really hungry for food or just trying to keep yourself busy? Maybe you’re feeling sad and trying to find some comfort in delicious snacks. The bad news is that comfort food rarely provides that. In most cases, it even causes regret and more sadness.

More often than not, keeping yourself distracted will make you forget about your urge to snack or eat. Keeping your hand occupied with something, no matter if it’s Candy Crush or a game at JackpotCity online casino, will prevent you from reaching for the bag of chips or the cookies. Slot machines, an abundant resource at the JackpotCity, have been shown to put their players in the “machine zone”, a controversial state of mind that’s surprisingly useful when trying to keep yourself distracted.

Look for the causes behind your cravings. Maybe your body or mind is trying to tell you something.

Your Meal Requires Your Attention

Our whole life has become a series of multitasking, and even when we’re eating, we try to squeeze in another activity. We watch TV, we read, we talk, we work. This can often result in overeating because you’re not paying enough attention to the amount of food you are consuming. Also, it can stop you from enjoying your meals.

Instead of multitasking, try to look, smell, and actually taste the food you’re eating. You will experience more satisfaction, and you’ll be sufficiently aware of the feedback your body is sending you when it is finally full.

Take Your Meals and Your Snacks Slowly

Speaking of appreciating your food, you cannot do that when you’re shoveling food into your mouth while rushing to move on to the next activity. An important factor for getting feedback from your body is taking your time while eating. This way, the message will come before your plate is empty or before you pour yourself another portion. Eating slowly and mindfully is also imperative for treating both your food and your body with respect.

Get to Know Your Food

Think of your meals as life partners. If you look at the surface and feel attracted by appearance, it’s a one-night stand that can end up badly. If you study your meal, get to know its properties, and understand its nutritional value, it can bring you happiness for life.

Think about what you are eating and why. Does it contain enough vitamins? Will the amount of protein be enough to keep you full? Maybe some of the ingredients of your meal can harm your health. Preparing meals on your own is the best way to learn about your food and appreciate it more.

Satisfy Your Cravings

This may sound like controversial advice, especially considering the previous tips, directing you towards eating healthily. However, running away from your desires for a long time can be frustrating. Of course, if there is a healthier alternative to your craving, try to go for that. For example, if you feel like eating chocolate, take a bar of black chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa. If you want cheese, choose the one with a lower percentage of fat, and so on. That way, you’ll satisfy the craving and also get to feel good because you’ve made a healthier choice.

To Sum It up

People need food to survive. But food is much more than just fuel for the body. It is also a source of enjoyment, and our attitude towards it is an incredibly important part of self-love. This is something you might have to work on, but the goal is worth the effort.

Have you seen Sex and the City, the movie? If not, I’m very sorry to spoil this for you, but do you know the part when Samantha breaks up with Smith and says that she needs to work on her relationship with herself? Establishing self- love: To be kind to yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do for positivity.

How often do we ever say that to ourselves? I’m by no means advocating ending relationships based on finding more time for loving ourselves. I’m just asking: how often do we love and cherish ourselves as we are? How kind are we to ourselves?

The answer is most likely – not nearly enough.

Let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to show yourself self- love and be kind to yourself, the person you indeed are, better.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

The only person you need to compare yourself to if you want to play the comparing game is the person you used to be. Yesterday, a year ago, a decade ago – as long as you’re becoming more and more the kind of person you want to be, you are doing a great job.

Comparing yourself to others is merely pointless. First, you don’t know their story, not really. You only know what they choose to share with you, and that’s most often just the best bits. And second of all, they are not you. They are entirely different, and you can never be them, which means that you get to be you – the best possible person in the world.

Stop Worrying About What Others Think

While we are on the subject of comparisons and judgment – you should also aim to stop caring about what other people think about you. You can never actually influence that. People will have their beliefs and values, and they will believe what they want to find. Rare are those whose opinions and deeply rooted ideas can be changed through a conversation or a series of actions.

The only person who needs to approve of you and your actions is, you’ve guessed it – you. You are living your life for yourself, and you can do whatever you want with it (as long as you’re not harming someone else!). No one else will live your life, and you are not living your life so someone can approve of it. You do you, babe, and stick to your dreams.

Reconsider the Way You Treat Your Body

And I am not for one second talking about your weight if that’s what you were thinking.

I’m talking about the other things you’re doing to your body: are you making sure it gets plenty of rest, and that it receives the recovery time it needs from lugging you around all day? Are you giving it enough water, the nutrients it needs, and making sure your skin and hair are getting the nourishment they need? This is what self- love is about and to be kind to yourself.

Think about the way you sleep, as not sleeping enough is the gateway to a bad mood and poor mental and physical health. Think about the products you’re putting into your body and whether they’re giving it what it needs to grow and prosper. If you identify any room for change and improvement, seize it. After all, your body is yours for life, and the better you treat it, the more it will allow you to do.

Don’t Worry About the Future and Dwell on the Past

The funny thing about life is that we only ever get to experience it in the present, and yet we spend so much time living in the past (which can’t be changed) or trying to imagine the future (which we can never predict and never truly control).

Learning how to live in the present is an incredible gift and a habit you can learn to nurture, and one that will help you live a more fulfilled and enjoyable life. If you manage to stop obsessing about things that have happened and those that have yet to happen, you will realize there’s a whole lot of life right here and now.

Be Mindful of Your Language

Finally, think about the way you talk to yourself. Is there a whole lot of negativity or self- love there? Do you call yourself all kinds of names? Do you nitpick at every tiny little thing that is not perfect about you?

The thing is, we would never speak as negatively to anyone else – we only do it to ourselves.

And we are no different from all those other people when you come to think about it. We are all prone to mistakes, none of us are perfect, and we all deserve to be treated with kindness and a whole lot of love.

So next time you start talking to yourself negatively, check yourself, and change your language. You’ll notice it makes quite a difference.

To Sum It Up

Being kind and showing self-love to yourself is a habit you might have to work on – but it’s never too late or early to start. So try some of these tips out, and see how your life changes for the better.

As the global pandemic is still not letting up, we will all have to postpone our faraway travels and stick to the comforts of our own homes or destinations close at hand.

Here’s how you can reach the far ends of the earth travel without leaving your home.

While television is certainly not a substitute for the real thing, one of the best ways to get to know a faraway destination is to watch a documentary about it. Any of his documentaries, including The Layover and of course, No Reservations, will give you a fantastic glimpse into all kinds of Parts Unknown and set your taste buds on fire.
You can start by making something less adventurous and more readily available, like some Italian pasta, or some Mexican tacos, or Spanish paella. Then you can move on to something more complex, like Asian pho.

While you may have slight issues sourcing some of the ingredients you will need, there are plenty of specialized stores that carry different spices and products, so with a little bit of research, you’ll be able to find what you need.

Order In

Of course, there’s the option of not cooking but still eating something incredibly foreign without leaving your home. There are so many beautiful restaurants available in even the smallest of towns, and you will undoubtedly be able to find one that will offer a meal you’ve never tried before. This is also a great way to experiment with flavors safely in the comfort of your own home.

Travel is, of course, an incredible way to get in close contact with different languages and cultures. As you are now robbed of that opportunity, you can bring a different culture to your own home and start learning its language without leaving your home.

We’d suggest starting with Spanish – it is easy for an English speaker to master it to a certain degree at home, and you can learn it relatively fast. Of course, it will all depend on your dedication, but summer at home can be the perfect time to devote some time to this practice.

You can either choose to read a travel guide, which will be packed with information, but maybe not that fun of a read, or you can read a book that is set in a different country.

Non-fiction is also an option, and you can go for something about the culture and history of a country, city, or region, or go for a fictionalized version of the same history and culture. Edward Rutherfurd has some great books on major cities like Paris and London.

Often music is incredibly telling of the culture and history of a country or region. Just think of the samba, or the tango, or jazz.

There are so many incredible playlists available, again on YouTube, that can transport you to a fantastic destination. A lot of them also feature images that showcase the destination in question, or you can choose your little slide show and look at an appropriate image while listening to the music.

Or you can just close your eyes and let the music take you on your travels without leaving your home.

True, this will never entirely be the real thing, but while you’re stuck at home, you can still enjoy the benefits of technology and visit Sydney, or Rome, or Prague, via a screen.

This is also a great way to find routes you can one day walk in real life, once travel becomes safe again.
