Stress, anxiety, and depression are three of the most common psychological conditions people suffer from. As an individual, you might experience stress or anxiousness because of your work, family responsibilities, speaking in public, or even socializing. Furthermore, 2020 has given rise to multiple illnesses, with the coronavirus playing a significant role. There are numerous occasions where you might require medication – natural or herbal remedies to alleviate anxiety and stress. Here are the 9 best healing herbs for stress and anxiety.

Ginger

Ginger has been a part of ancient traditional practices in Asia and several other parts of this region. Back in the day, people used to consume this aromatic herb to alleviate anxiety and make the most of its potency. Ginger accommodates an antioxidant – gingerol, which helps to neutralize your body’s harmful chemicals while you are stressed. Stress and anxiety lead to symptoms that can result in an upset stomach since it produces many vital acids for digestion. Ginger tends to rescue the production of stomach acid.

Chamomile

Chamomile has been popular in Ancient Roman and Greek traditions. They used to consume chamomile for its calming and soothing properties. Several phenolics present in the herb like quinones, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and other compounds can help reduce anxiety and stress. If you want to enjoy a sip of chamomile tea, mix a couple of teaspoons of chamomile flowers (dry) in two cups of hot water. Let it get absorbed and infused for two to three minutes. After that, strain and add a bit of honey to provide a sweet note to the tea.

Cannabis

In the modern age, people are more familiar with cannabis as an alternative medication. The natural supplement gets extracted from cannabis plants and is used for recreational and medicinal purposes. This psychoactive supplement has several naturally-occurring compounds that bind to the receptors or your brain and alleviate anxiety, depression, and stress.

Cannabis interacts with your body’s ECS, which is responsible for bodily processes. In several parts of the globe, people have started incorporating cannabis use amid their services. The hospitality sector is one of the sectors that have come out with cannabis-infused services, menus, massage, and many more. A cannabis dispensary has several cannabis-infused products that you can choose from. Apart from a cannabis dispensary, you can also look for restaurants and spas for cannabis-infused services.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a herbal supplement that can alleviate emotional and physical stress. It helps to lessen the stress hormone by lowering cortisol levels. In such a process, the stress hormones can cause your body’s neurotransmitters to become unbalanced. This leads to anxiety, insomnia, and depression. To make Ashwagandha tea, mix half a teaspoon of ashwagandha powder in the glass of hot milk. You can either take it right before your breakfast or can leave it for your evening hours.

St. John’s Wort

St. John’s wort’s chemical name is Hypericum perforatum, which has been quite popular in ancient times. Earlier, people consumed the herb for its medicinal properties. One of the systematic reviews of 2016 found out that this herbal supplement is more impactful than a placebo to treat mild and moderate stress and depression. A cannabis dispensary might not have this supplement, so look for other online and offline stores to buy St. John’s Wort. However, before incorporating the supplement into your lifestyle or visiting a cannabis dispensary, have a word with your doctor.

Ginseng

Ginseng originated from the gnarled roots of Asian or American ginseng plants. It is essential to know that Asian, Siberian, and Eleuthero ginseng are various plants with several active ingredients. Chinese medicine practitioners have consumed and used this herb for thousands of years. That is because it can help in improving your energy levels and mental clarity. This, in turn, alleviates anxiety and stress. You can check this herbal supplement on any online and offline store near you.

Lavender

Lavender is also one of the herbs that people have consumed for centuries to remedy nervousness, stress, depression, and anxiety. The most common way of administering lavender is in the shape of lavender oil. A regular massage with lavender oil helps reduce stress and anxiety and gives way to positivity. One of the studies also shows that lavender effectively ameliorates stress and anxiety by affecting an individual’s nervous system.

Its sedative effects can also lead to a significant change in mood, associated with anxiousness and nervousness. You can also store the oil for treatment in the future.

Valerian

Valeriana officinalis or valerian is a herbal plant native to Asia and Europe. For several centuries, native people have consumed valerian root to treat anxiety, sleep problems, and depression. Valerian root can be consumed in several forms like tablets, tea, and tinctures. If you suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression, take around 120 to 200mg of this herb thrice. Make sure that you consume the last dosage of this herb just before bedtime.

Passionflower

Passiflora or passionflower is a herb with over five hundred species. Many experts suggest that passionflower is effective and impactful in treating nervousness, restlessness, and anxiety. According to one of the reviews conducted in 2010, some evidence suggests that passionflower’s antianxiety properties can be compared to benzodiazepines’. It is a class drug that experts and doctors recommend for treating anxiety. You can consume the herb either in the form of tablets or through a liquid tincture.

Final Thoughts

In times of coronavirus, staying healthy and in shape are two of the vital things you need to take care of. Since your health is of utmost importance, make sure you buy such herbs for stress and anxiety. Also, know that people across the globe have started consuming herbal and natural supplements. These nine herbal supplements help you treat anxiety, depression, nervousness, and stress, but they also provide soothing and positive effects.

Just like certain types of wine and beer taste incredible when paired with the right dish, so do certain types of tea. Black tea will make a better pairing with a steak than green tea will, but even at that, only certain types of black tea will pair well with that steak. To explain this even further, we’ve put together a quick guide to the best tea and food pairings.

Black Tea

The word you’ll see used to describe black tea a lot of the time is “robust,” and it lives up to this moniker. Black tea is typically a very strong-flavored tea, and that makes it an excellent pairing for rich, flavorful foods like beef, pasta, and many dishes with a high amount of spice or seasoning. However, different types of black tea pair better with certain foods.

For instance, if you’re going with an earthy or smoky type of black tea, then it’ll pair better with darker meats and very spicy foods. The stronger the flavor, the more likely it is that you should go with a smoky black tea over an earthy one. However, if you have a fruity black tea, that will pair better with a dessert dish.

Green Tea

Green tea is typically much lighter than black tea, both in color and flavor. It provides consumers with a natural flavor that makes a great pairing with lighter foods like seafood, chicken, and in some cases, even fruits and salads. That being said, similar to black tea, there are different tiers of green tea that work with a select category of foods. If you’re drinking a vegetal tea, you’ll want to pair it with some excellent seafood thanks to its earthy flavor.

If you’re choosing a smoky green tea instead of a vegetal one, it’s going to pair better with greasier foods like fried chicken and pizza. It’ll match great with a side of potatoes as well. When it comes to fruity green teas, they’re going to make a better pairing with fruit salads, whole wheat bread, chicken, turkey, and unsweetened pastries.

White Tea

Unlike green or black tea, you don’t have to worry about pairing a fruity white tea with the right dessert. Instead, it’s all about matching the subtle, delicate flavor of white tea with a lighter dish that won’t overshadow it. When pairing white tea with a meal, make sure it’s a plain salad or very lightly seasoned seafood. The reason for this is that if you match the light flavor of white tea with a dish that is too heavy, such as a steak or even some fruit, it will almost entirely cancel out the tea’s flavor.

Now that you have a quick guide to the best tea and food pairings, your next meal can indeed be something to remember. However, the pairings don’t stop there. If you want to personalize your tea and food pairings, you can do so easily. For example, if you’re going to maintain a low-cholesterol diet, you can mix some healthy foods with one of the many types of tea for cholesterol available on the market. When it comes to tea, there are so many ways to fit your drink of choice into your lifestyle.

Some days, I am looking for a pick-me-up in the morning or something to help calm my anxiety and depression before bed. When this happens, I start with a teacup in my cupboard. Every night before bed, I make myself a nice hot cup of tea to unwind. And while my bedtime ritual prepares me for a good night’s sleep, it turns out those tiny tea leaves can make a big difference in fighting against daily stress or physical symptoms of anxiety and depression. So the next time you are feeling down treat yourself to one of these teas for easing anxiety and depression.

Some other times, you can add Kratom to any of these teas for a boost of energy. This dietary supplement can also have analgesic (pain relieving), anti-inflammatory, or muscle relaxant effects.

Start Your Day with Some Passion Flower Tea

Passionflower is a climbing vine, and its properties may help you climb your way through the day. This tea can help you feel more energized and positive as it is known to improve mood and stress hormones, reduce anxiety symptoms, or treat sleeping disorders. Passionflower is also known to improve skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, increases libido, and helps fight addiction by soothing withdrawal symptoms.

Its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties are great immune-boosters. It can regulate immune cell functions against cancer, reduce your chances of neurodegenerative conditions, and limits cellular damage. Turmeric can also be used to promote digestion, help relieve arthritis pain, and reduce depression symptoms by fighting chronic inflammation.

I have always thought that if someone invites you for a cup of tea you should thank it, but if you’re being asked to have a cup of green tea, then you have to appreciate it with your heart.

Green tea has many benefits for your body, and I love to drink it. Typically, I take it in the morning because it is the perfect stimulant my metabolism needs.

They say green tea is the most excellent beverage on the planet. It’s full of antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on our bodies.

Let’s take a more in-depth look:

You will know that an antioxidant is a molecule capable of retarding or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. On the other hand, oxidation is produced by transferring electrons from certain substances to oxidizing agents, so that’s why consuming foods rich in antioxidants is so essential for our body.

Now, when we are aware of how our body works and what is best for it, the healthy options always come in will be Green Tea.

The benefits?

Yes, I know I’ve said that it has many benefits, so let’s name them one by one.

1. Antioxidants can help reduce the risk of cancer, such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and prostate.

And, an important tip, don’t add milk to your tea. It can lower the antioxidants value that green tea has.

2. It helps with your brain health, and not only with its functioning, but it also protects your brain in old age. Studies have shown that compounds in Green Tea have protective effects that help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, the two most common neurodegenerative disorders.

3. Green tea may reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. This disease involves elevated blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that Green Tea drinkers had an 18% lower risk of becoming diabetics due to Green Tea can reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.

Coffee is a great early morning energizer to start up your day right. Many people can’t function properly in the early morning without drinking coffee. Although coffee is a high energy booster, too much caffeine can cause harmful effects to your body. If you want to cut down on your coffee intake, then consider trying other coffee alternatives that also boosts your energy.

While coffee has a significant energizing effect, it can also harm your body if you drink too much.

It doesn’t mean that you won’t have an energizer when you need it. There are other coffee alternatives for a daily boost of energy if you don’t prefer coffee or can’t add coffee to your diet. Some of these coffee alternatives are also healthier compared to coffee.

Matcha Tea

Matcha tea comes from ground young tea leaves and is usually in the form of green powder. Studies have linked matcha green tea to a variety of health benefits, like helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, and even encouraging weight loss. It’s a great coffee substitute for a daily boost of energy, which has the same effect coffee does minus the jittery feeling you get in coffee.

Matcha tea also contains caffeine, and it also has L-theanine. L-theanine is an amino acid that helps relieve stress and relaxes people. It also minimizes the effects caffeine has on our bodies.

Photo: Jason Leung/ Unsplash

A study about L-theanine suggests that L-theanine improves the effectiveness of certain chemotherapy drugs.

A small dosage of L-theanine (250 mg to 400 mg) helps improve your overall sleep quality.

Matcha tea is an excellent alternative to coffee for a daily boost of energy. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine balances out the jittery and restlessness you get when you drink coffee.

You can also drink pure teas like green tea and black tea, or herbal teas like peppermint tea which also has similar effects to Matcha tea. Generally, tea bags will contain more caffeine than loose leaf tea, so keep that in mind as you are picking out which tea to drink in the morning. Overall, tea is a great alternative that is packed with health benefits and energizes you.

Green Smoothies

Vegetables are a powerhouse when it comes to health benefits and boosts your energy at the same time. A smoothie is also a better alternative rather than consuming vegetables in solid form. Experts recommend drinking 3 cups of vegetables daily for a healthy lifestyle.

If you want to try a green smoothie, pick vegetables that contain less sugar, fewer calories, and a lot of antioxidants. A great start would be kale, broccoli, and spinach, which reduces blood pressure and prevents heart disease. Drinking 300 ml of green smoothie daily can lower your LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol).

Photo: Alexander Mils/ Unsplash

The green smoothie also helps you with weight loss, improves hydration and digestion, and gives you smooth skin. It also improves your mood and relieves you of depression. Overall, a green smoothie is a great coffee alternative that gives you a boost and energy and keeps your body healthy.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an excellent alternative for coffee. It’s made from fermented apple, similar to how alcohol is made. Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which is shown to affect insulin sensitivity and blood sugar levels positively.

It can also kill most types of harmful bacteria and can be used to preserve food. Apple cider vinegar contains amino acids and antioxidants that help give you the boost of energy and replenish your body. It can also help you lose belly fat.

Taking too much apple cider vinegar can cause adverse effects like tooth enamel erosion. It’s best taken at 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and mixed it in a large glass of water to reduce its acidic effect.

Yerba Mate

Yerba mate comes from the leaves and twigs of the Yerba Mate plant that grows in the South American region. Yerba mate has similar effects of coffee but minus the caffeine. It contains the alkaloid theobromine, which can also be found in chocolate, and gives you a boost of energy without the side effects that caffeine in coffee gives you.

Yerba mate also contains antioxidants that help cleanse your body and prevent harmful diseases. Yerba mate is a growing popular coffee alternative, especially for millennials.

Cacao

Cacao is mostly associated with chocolates, which are harmful when taken in excess—Cacao, when unprocessed, is healthy.

Cacao contains polyphenols that are antioxidants that help detoxify your body and prevent most types of cancer and diseases. It also contains flavonoids that have anti-inflammatory effects.

Mixing cacao with warm milk can give the same flavor as what coffee does to your body. Cacao may also improve your overall mood and relaxes your muscles for a great start in the morning.

Photo: Tiard Schulz/ Unsplash

Unprocessed cocoa tastes bitter and is processed with alkaline to reduce the bitterness. This cuts about 60% of the health benefits you get from unprocessed cocoa. If you want a good cup of cocoa, use unprocessed cocoa and mixed it with milk for a great cup of a coffee alternative that will boost your energy.

Signs You’re Drinking Too Much Coffee

While coffee can be healthy, taking too much of it can lead to adverse effects. Health experts recommend a maximum of 400 mg of caffeine a day. If you’re unsure if you’re taking too much coffee, then these signs will tell you to stop visiting your favorite coffee shop and cut down on caffeine intake:

Sleeping Late – The effects of caffeine on your body can last for up to 4-6 hours. Drinking coffee late in the afternoon or in the evening could lead you to sleep late at night.

Low on energy – Taking too much coffee can lead to your body desensitizing to caffeine, and instead of giving you power will instead lower your energy levels.

Weight gain – caffeine is known to increase the levels of cortisol in your body. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone, and high levels of it can cause a person to overeat, which leads to weight gain.

Deficiency in minerals – Caffeine can affect how your body absorbs minerals. Caffeine has been known to affect the absorption of iron in our body. It also reduces the storage of minerals such as zinc, calcium, and magnesium that are helpful to your body.

Photo: Nathan Dumlao/ Unsplash

Conclusion

Different coffee alternatives have better health benefits compared to coffee. It doesn’t mean that coffee is a wrong choice, but you should consume it not in excess. Caffeine can be harmful to our body when taken in excess; that’s why looking for coffee alternatives can help balance it out.
