Capturing Las Vegas Culture

Mott 32 Las Vegas will not just emulate the values and design of the original Hong Kong venue, but also include a tribute to the history of Las Vegas and capture details of the culture.

The Menu

The Mott 32 in Las Vegas will feature can a contemporary Cantonese menu, with Beijing and Sichuan elements. Some epic dishes incorporate dim sum like you’ve never seen it before. These include ginger crab meat congee and sticky black cod. You can also expect to see Mott 32’s signature dishes “barbecue Pluma Iberico pork with Yellow Mountain honey” and Peking duck cooked and prepared for 48-hours before serving.

Soho restaurant West-bourne turns that notion on its head and seeks to provide delicious plant-based dishes that cater to customers’ wildest cravings. TFT brought a friend this week. Tahini-fried yuba with parsley cream, preserved lemon, and bread and butter pickles. The New No New York Creation from Oakland. They met TFT at the Tartine pop-up in 2017 (which was one of the few times they’ve taken BART over there lol). They’ve kept in touch, though. She’s really crusty but lately her taste his flipped to more Boney M, Sparks, Pull up to the Bumper Grace Jones kind of stuff. She does feel that anthropomorphic sandwich relationships in New York have sadly deteriorated in the past 25 years. “It’s really not like it used to be,” she groused. Both start at 6.

Finding a burger joint on a list of the top vegetarian restaurants in New York City may be a bit surprising, but the title is well-deserved. The veggie burgers at Superiority Burger are just that: superior. Superiority Burger offers a more casual dining experience and puts a spin on the meaning of fast food. Don’t let the name confuse you: the menu at The Butcher’s Daughter doesn’t contain even an ounce of meat. This plant-based restaurant touts itself as a “vegetable slaughterhouse,” carving and cooking vegetables using the same techniques a skilled butcher would. The menu changes daily to include seasonal produce from local farms. Every dish is completely vegetarian, and many of them are also vegan and gluten-free. The Butcher’s Daughter is open all day, and it features a different menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Fan favorites include the Mediterranean cauliflower T-bone “steak” and the Croque Madame, which features adzuki bacon, gruyere cheese, and lemon Dijonaise sauce. Of course, no meal is complete without something sweet. Culinary Director Malcolm Wood and Executive Chef Lee Man Sing have years of experience and an intense passion for the traditional recipes of home cooking that have lasted throughout time. They draw on Chinese culture and its philosophy of farm-to-table cooking that has been shaped from generation to generation, by one of the largest farming nations in the world. The result is a spectacular dining experience that pays homage to the bravery of families, like those who left Hong Kong to open that first convenience store, who made Chinese food and culture a global phenomenon. Today, patrons from Doha to London crave dim sum and Cantonese cooking. Mott 32 satiates those cravings and delivers it as home cooking should be, in a more rustic and honest way.

Their cooking is a selection of Cantonese, Szechuan and Beijing styles, ingredients and techniques. Their custom-made duck oven and special air-drying duck fridge are central features. The signature Apple Wood Roasted 42 Days Peking Duck is roasted in the traditional Cantonese style.

As part of their farm-to-table philosophy, they believe in bringing the cooking into the restaurant which is why they offer a window directly to the heated excitement of the red-hot woks stations, allowing guests to dine around the duck oven and BBQ kitchen.

Though their food is the star of the show, they have paired an innovative cocktail menu that will intrigue and complement any Mott 32 experience. Their mixologists have meticulously researched Chinese ingredients such osmanthus honey, jasmine tea, ginger, matcha powder, Szechuan pepper, tangerine, shiso, plum, five-spice and goji berry to name but a few; and what they do with them makes their cocktails an awe-inspiring experience.

Joyce Wang and Maximal Concepts are responsible for the design of the restaurant. Joyce is a Hong Kong native architect who has helped spread her city’s reach around the world, most famously with her design of the Cabana Rooms at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. This past February, Joyce was honoured by Hospitality Design Magazine USA as winner of “Wave of the Future 2014” – an award for designers who are considered accomplished internationally, but young enough to be considered visionary. The design of Mott 32 lifts the industrial elements from New York and pairs them with classic Chinese elements creating an exciting combination that reflects the greater interconnectivity of the East meets West design cultures.

The first Mott 32 to open was located in the Standard Chartered Building, 4-4a Des Voeux Road, right in the heart of Central, Hong Kong. It is 7,500 square feet with 5 private rooms and can accommodate up to 170 diners, at any one time. Mott 32 is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. In 2015, Mott 32 was awarded Hong Kong Top 20 Best Restaurant, Best Interior Design, Best New Restaurant and Best Restaurant of Reader’s Choice Awards by Hong Kong Tatler Awards; World Interior of the Year by INSIDE World Festival of Interiors and Group Restaurant Champion of the Wine by Glass Restaurant Awards by Wine Luxe Magazine.

The team at Mott 32 has started to expand their influence even further, opening a location in Vancouver, Canada, with concrete plans to expand to Las Vegas in December, and after that, Bangkok!

Sukhothai has quickly risen to become one of the most highly regarded Thai restaurants in all of TO. It has four locations across the city, on Parliament, Dundas West, Wellington, and Front East, and serves up authentic Northern Thai cuisine on the daily. To kick things off, I always opt for the light and refreshing Mango Salad (if I’m with my family, the Crispy Spring Rolls are also a must.) All of their mains are cooked to perfection, but at Sukhothai my personal favourite is the Khao Soi with chicken or the Tom Kha Gai soup (a creamy coconut soup with herbs). Another fav are the Garlic Chicken Nuggets – sure to please all of your friends and family, no matter their age.

Right near Bloor-Yonge Station lies Sabai Sabai Kitchen and Bar, whose speciality is cooking up dishes from Northern Thailand and Laos. First off, I have to say that I love the atmosphere at Sabai Sabai. It is industrial chic at its finest, with exposed brick, festive paper lanterns, and plenty of local artwork. Onto the food! In terms of appetizers, I’m partial to the Crispy Taro Roll and Deep Fried Garlic Shrimp, both are crunchy on the outside yet soft and flavour-packed on the inside. Mains are broken down into small plates and large plates, making this the perfect spot for sharing. The “Laap Lao” or minced pork lettuce wraps, is the national dish of Laos and is simply delicious. The Street Styled Tossed Noodles are also a crowd favourite among my friends, made with rice noodles, peanuts, tamarind sauce, bean sprouts, and chicken. Plus, with an entire menu of vegan dishes, this is a great spot for carnivores and herbivores alike.

I have been a longtime fan of Pai, a Northern Thai eatery nestled on Duncan Street in the heart of the Entertainment District. Not only is the food absolutely delicious, but the atmosphere can’t be beat. It’s my go-to, whether dining with friends, my partner, or my parents, thanks to the festive and casual vibe throughout. Now onto the food, starting with the the Chef Nuit Pad Thai (truly one of the best pad Thais in Toronto). From the rice noodles cooked to perfection to the crunch from the bean sprouts and the touch of tartness from the fresh lime, you can’t go wrong with this classic dish. My other personal favourite is the Gaeng Masaman, a mild peanut curry with braised beef and potatoes, topped with crispy fried shallots. Also worth mentioning is Pai’s appetizers. For me, their appetizers shine just as much (maybe even more) than their main dishes. First, we have the Papaya Salad. Not your traditional papaya salad, theirs is made with tamarind juice, coconut sugar, pork rinds, shrimp chips, and salted crab. The other must-have app is the Grabong, essentially a mountain of thin butternut squash french fries that have been fried in a red curry paste (don’t forget to dunk them in the sweet garlic tamarind dip!)

This Parkdale spot, which shares its name with its original location in Vancouver, is a great way to get through the last few weeks of winter. You can’t see into Shameful Tiki Room from the outside, but on the inside it’s a tropical oasis, perfect for your vacation dreams. Try their tiki themed cocktails, like the Hurricane or the Blue Hawaii, or snack on treats like pineapple fried rice or teriyaki broccoli.

The Lockhart

Are you a long time Harry Potter fan (of the books, movies, or both)? The Lockhart is the place for you. The only Harry Potter themed restaurant in the GTA, the Lockhart is a great place to check out for all your Gryffindors, Slytherins, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws. Their magical cocktails include the Shacklebolt and the Lavender Brown, and their brunch menu includes the unique banana bread peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s also a perfect place to take any out-of-town friends who haven’t made it to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter down in Florida yet.

O.NOIR

You might have heard of this concept before: a pitch black restaurant, so that you fully enjoy your meal without conceptions based on vision. Toronto’s version, located on Church Street, also features an entirely blind staff. Plus, you can try their surprise starters, main courses, or desserts (available in meat, vegetarian, or fish) for some extra spice. They do require a minimum of two courses, but it’s worth it for the ambiance.

This Parkdale staple, formerly located across the street and known as Doomies, is the creme de la creme of vegan junk foods. Their current location also includes a vegan ice cream parlour, along with a brewery. Start with their mac and cheese cup, dine on their chicken bacon ranch or philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and finish with their caramel apple waffle. All of their sandwiches come with fries, which you can upsize to any of their ‘fun fries’ like garlic butter or animal style. Combine all that with a pint of Principled Pilsner or See The Light Lager for the perfect junk-food style veggie dinner.

Disgraceland

Disgraceland, a cheaper version of Vegandale located in Bloorcourt Village, is just as good as its fancier compatriot. They also feature a more diverse food menu, including taco bowls and their ‘shroomy doom’ appetizer. You can even choose your side: fries, greens, potato salad, coleslaw, or soup. They also serve three different types of poutine, one for every meal of the day.

The Goods

Are you interested in the raw vegan experience? Try The Goods, located in Roncesvalles. The Goods offers options for every dietary restriction, including gluten-free and soy-free. They offer standards like their Tricky Tahini and Shades of Green salad bowls, and more creative offerings such as the mung bean cake plate.

Mythology

Another Parkdale junk-food vegan restaurant, Mythology, also offers a great weekend brunch menu and scrumptious desserts. Never fear, though – you can get pancakes any day of the week, and you can even order it topped with coconut whipped cream or salted caramel sauce. They also do particularly creative milkshakes (which come in ‘spiked’ versions) such as the Its My Birthday Shake or the Caramel Kettle Corn shake. They even offer vegan Caesars, for those who like their drinks on the savory side.

Hogtown Vegan

Hogtown Vegan doesn’t offer reservations, but it does offer top notch Phish ‘n Chips and Beef and Dumplings Stew. Hogtown Vegan has locations on College Street and up on Bloor Street West. Many of their dishes are inspired by the American South, like their unchicken and waffles. And if you’re particularly in the mood for fried food, try their fried apple pie, deep-fried oreos, or deep-fried banana splits.

E L Ruddy Co Cafe

On the smaller side, EL Ruddy Co in the Dundas West area is a great place if you’re looking for a vegetarian spot with a chiller vibe. Be warned, though – EL Ruddy is a cash-only location, so stop by the ATM on your way to lunch! Definitely try their tofu omelettes, or the burritos if you happen to be particularly hungry.

La Carnita

La Carnita has several locations, four of which are in Toronto (one is in Winnipeg, and one is in Baltimore, Maryland, for some reason.) Don’t let that fool you, though – La Carnita’s cuisine is great, from their bar snacks to their sweets. Try their Mexican sweet corn to start, follow it up with Tuna Ceviche Tostada or sweet potato tacos, and top it off with crunchy churros. Definitely pair your meal with their signature Carnita Margarita to complete the package.

Tortería San Cosme

Looking for a slightly more chill venue for your meal? Try out Tortería San Cosme, in Kensington Market. Unlike many other places in the city, Tortería San Cosme focuses on ricas tortas (aka, grilled sandwiches). Their nopales (cactus), Cochinita pibil (pulled pork), and tres quesos (three cheese) are especially delicious. For sides, try their papitas con chile or molletes con chorizo to really spice up your life.

Grand Electric

With locations in both Parkdale and Trinity Bellwoods, Grand Electric is a great place to fill your craving for tacos. They even offer a deal – three tacos and a beer for just nineteen dollars. They serve several types of tacos, ranging from cauliflower to beef cheek. Start with their guacamole and chips, and end your night with their key lime pie.

Pancho y Emiliano

If you’re looking for your fill of tacos and margaritas in either Kensington Market or the Entertainment District, Pancho y Emiliano is the place for you. Their variety of margaritas include the Spicy Margarita, the Margarita de Tamarindo, and the Margarita Rosa, among many others. Dine out on Tacos de Fajitas Vegetarianas, Tacos Fajitas de Pollo, or (if you’re not in a taco sort of mood) Artisanal Chicharrón Quesadillas. They’ve also got vegetarian and gluten free options a plenty.

Rosalinda

For the vegetarians and vegans out there, try out this meat-free joint on Richmond Street West (east of University). Their bowls, like the crispy tofu rice or the mushroom pozole, are delicious, as are the Tijuana-style broccolini, the root vegetables and mole! And the best part is that you won’t be splurging… on your diet, at least.

El Catrin

If you’re in the mood to head out to the Distillery District (or lucky enough to already live out there) make sure to check out this highly rated restaurant. What other place in Toronto can you have crickets added to your guacamole? Their tasting menu, which features six courses from five different regions of Mexico, is a great way to try out their range without actually eating your way through their menu. Try the vegetarian or baja tacos, the brochetas de pulpo or the enchiladas gomes, and anything from their botanas (small bites) menu. Yum!

The real beauty of Granada lies in what only looks like run-down bars. They’re open late, but dimly lit, and not ideal for Instagram selfies. You’d probably walk by them if you weren’t tipped off to the budget friendly, mouthwatering delicacies that lie within, often for a Euro or less. Many of these establishments offer free tapas, or small plates, with the purchase of a drink. Buy a couple of beers and you’ll be satiated for the rest of the evening.

Some tapas bars, usually just called bars, have been around since the 1940s. They’re humble but bustling; filled with authentic, Granadino hospitality and a kind energy that has been maintained for over half a century, so that many neighborhoods in Granada have remained unchanged, preserving this little city’s stunning culture and history. Most of these bars stay open until at least midnight, and being within walking distance of the Alhambra, are the perfect post-tour snack. I prefer the night tour of the Alhambra, when everything seems so much more majestic than in the daytime.

Bar Los Diamantes is one of the oldest staples in Granada, thriving since 1942. It specializes in seafood, especially calamari and bacalao, salt cod. Its most famous and local-driven location is one Calle Navas, 28, but there are four other locations to choose from. If that sounds a little too fishy for you, but you still want the traditional vibes, check out Bodegas Castaneda. Pacing yourself is important at these venues – if you fill up on too much cheap beer to start, you won’t be able to wash down all those tasty tapas. Instead, start with a caña, or small glass, and experience as many small plates as possible.

Carnivores will need to stop by the La Trastienda, which is open until 1:30am and is part shop, part tapas bar. Now adorned with a terrace, the introduction to this bar is a mini charcuteria, behind which you must squeeze through an antique till to a secret back. Here lies the bar filled with all the chorizo and salchichón that our hearts desire.

My best piece of advice? Venture off-off-line from reviews and just try a local bar next to wherever you’re staying. The less glitzy it looks, the better the food will be – trust me.

Goldstruck

Handcrafted beverages, homemade pastries, and a warm, cozy atmosphere are what you get with Goldstruck. Located on Cumberland, this Yorkville coffee shop is one of the most popular in the area. Its industrial chic vibe complete with Edison light bulbs instantly warms and relaxes its patrons.

The setup is long and narrow with a mixture of smaller round tables built for groups of 1-2 and larger rectangular tables in back, with limited bar seating along the window. Their extensive menu ranges from espresso-based drinks such as a Flat White and a Cortado to Cold Brew and V60 Pour Over.

To go with your quality cup of Joe, they have an assortment of goodies, including classic butter tarts, sea salt chocolate chip cookies, croissant sandwiches, and pain au chocolat. Rounding out the reasons I love this Yorkville gem: their to-go coffee cups. I’m a sucker for a stamped coffee cup and Goldstruck’s is one of the best in Toronto.

5 Elements Coffee & Espresso Bar

5 Elements is one of the first coffee shops I fell in love with in the city. I loved it for a number of reasons, namely that it was spacious, bright, had a strong WiFi connection, and excellent service. But also because it introduced me to one of my favourite baked goods in the city: the cheddar chive scone (more on that later). 5 Elements is tucked away at the corner of Avenue Road and Webster. It is perfect for families, students, and friends alike, and we usually see a mix of patrons in this hip café at all times. Known for their Instagrammable latte art, you can’t go wrong with any of the organic espresso-based drinks on their menu or their loose leaf teas (they have an entire chest of Sloane Fine Tea).

Beyond their delicious coffee and array of tea, this independent café happens to serve the city’s best scone. Scones are baked fresh daily, but get them while they’re hot because they sell out fast. Flavours vary but the most common are blueberry and cheddar chive (the latter of which was once described by my friend as “life-changing”). If you’re after something more filling than a scone, they also have an entire selection of raw, vegan, and gluten-free energy balls and protein cookies, as well as a range of sandwiches, wraps, and salads.

Sorry Coffee Co.

Yorkville’s Sorry Coffee Co. might be small, but what it lacks in space it makes up for in excellent coffee. This independent café is nestled in the back of the Kit & Ace store off of Bloor Street (there is a second, more direct entrance off of Critchley Lane). An Instagram lover’s paradise, Sorry is definitely the most aesthetically pleasing coffee shop on this list, with its marble countertops, copper appliances, acrylic menu, geometric light fixtures, and of course, its cup art. This Yorkville coffee enclave is known for their ever-changing cup art.

Every few months, they partner with a different local artist to develop a new graphic to be stamped on their to-go cups. Fresh baked goods are currently made by local bakery, Motherdough Mill, and range from croissants and Danishes to muffins and scones, with vegan and gluten-free options available.
