Many people assume that a vegetarian diet must be boring and bland, populated only by raw vegetables and unsatisfying salads. Soho restaurant West-bourne turns that notion on its head and seeks to provide delicious plant-based dishes that cater to customers’ wildest cravings. Founded by Los Angeles native Camilla Marcus, West-bourne brings West Coast cuisine and community to the East Coast through its wholesome dishes and community nonprofit work. The menu features plant-based options that are both healthy and hearty, such as the Mushreuben sandwich and Echo tacos. Marcus takes special care to hire employees who “are passionate about taking care of others and nurturing our environment,” as she believes environmental consciousness is not only an individual effort, but also a community-wide affair. West-bourne places a heavy emphasis on sustainability and takes a zero-waste approach when creating their delicious dishes, all of which are made with locally sourced, organic ingredients.

Superiority Burger

Finding a burger joint on a list of the top vegetarian restaurants in New York City may be a bit surprising, but the title is well-deserved. The veggie burgers at Superiority Burger are just that: superior. Superiority Burger offers a more casual dining experience and puts a spin on the meaning of fast food. Every dish on the menu is entirely plant-based, and many items can be made vegan as well. The menu offers daily specials and regularly rotates items, so you can rest assured that each trip to Superiority Burger will be entirely unique. Every item on the menu is decidedly delectable, but the restaurant’s namesake dish, the Superiority Burger, certainly stands a cut above the rest. The Superiority Burger features a house-made veggie burger grilled to perfection and piled with classic burger fixings, including lettuce, tomato, pickle, and Muenster cheese. This burger can also be made vegan upon request at no additional charge.

Don’t let the name confuse you: the menu at The Butcher’s Daughter doesn’t contain even an ounce of meat. This plant-based restaurant touts itself as a “vegetable slaughterhouse,” carving and cooking vegetables using the same techniques a skilled butcher would. The menu changes daily to include seasonal produce from local farms. Every dish is completely vegetarian, and many of them are also vegan and gluten-free. The Butcher’s Daughter is open all day, and it features a different menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Fan favorites include the Mediterranean cauliflower T-bone “steak” and the Croque Madame, which features adzuki bacon, gruyere cheese, and lemon Dijonaise sauce. Of course, no meal is complete without something sweet. Luckily, The Butcher’s Daughter features several delectable dessert options, including tiramisu, pumpkin pie, and chocolate cake, all of which are gluten-free and vegan.
