Many parents ask themselves how to find the right school for their child before the start of each school year. You may sometimes feel like you are overly concerned about the details surrounding the schooling of your child. However, countless people have the same concern each year, and it’s better to be careful and reconsider all factors and opinions.

It’s perfectly normal to preoccupy yourself with all the seemingly trivial elements about providing your child with the best education. As young people, the formative years shape children into the adults they will one day become, shaping the future of our society. So in more than one way, choosing a school is more about the immediate surroundings than the education itself.

The choice of school for your child will influence not only their education but also their self-confidence. The environment continually shapes us, even as grownups, so it makes perfect sense to establish control where you can and make sure your child grows up to the fullest of their potential. If you have been wondering what to put first on your priority list for choosing a school, we prepared a few tips to make your journey easier.

The School’s Insurance Policy

If you are not exactly sure what to look for when choosing a school for your child, ensure education insurance is the first thing you check off your list. That way, if any incidents happen you’ll know you are covered by the insurance company.

Accidents happen, be it personal injuries or property damage, so safety should always come first. Insurance companies offer specialized plans for different educational facilities, and it’s always a good idea to check if the school’s education insurance is adequate.

Location and Proximity

As with many other things in life, location is crucial when choosing a school. Schools located in decent neighborhoods that have a good community are not that hard to come across. You may not always have a good school within walking distance of your home, but you can do your best to ensure the school is in a good area where violence and accidents are not a common occurrence.

School Curriculum

The curriculum of the school should encourage developing all facets of children’s personalities. Enriched curriculums always stand out and help evolve the creative, social, and physical aspects of education. Some schools occasionally include facultative extracurricular activities to encourage and follow the interest in a specific subject or contact with peers.

The Needs of Your Child

While no parent can do a background check on each teacher your child will meet in the classroom, the students always reflect some facets of teachers’ personalities. Good teachers should always make sure the children are involved and interested in the class. If the teachers are caring, kind, and compassionate, it will positively affect children’s behavior and grades.

Different Learning Styles

Some children respond better to different approaches when it comes to learning. Children of various dispositions and personalities all have their particular ways of going about work and play. The teachers at the school you choose should be skilled at recognizing characteristic learning styles between students and accommodate their needs to grow their talents. There are always students who have difficulties with one subject but excel at another, and the school you choose should provide a healthy, encouraging environment for both.

School Infrastructure and Core Values for Your Child

Schools should always have playgrounds and areas of adequate size for recreation and sports. Some schools are more focused on sports, while others focus on the arts and sciences, but you should be able to find a school that does a good enough job at balancing both. The school infrastructure should be inspiring and always encourage learning and growth.

Conclusion

We all want what’s best for our children, and the education department plays a unique role in their overall development throughout the years. Even though you can’t get advice from your child, you can get input by asking questions and observing the specific traits and inclinations that are noticeable early on. Parent’s decisions are never easy to make, especially when it comes to schooling, so always take into account how your child is feeling about the choice you make.

Visit the school and talk to teachers and other staff, and get input from other parents if possible. Whether you opt for a public or private school, it’s your responsibility to make sure that they are happy and content while learning in a safe environment that encourages their learning capacity and growth.

BBC radio has done a survey that proved that parents also go through a lot of stress and worry over their children’s exams. Nearly a quarter of parents said that their mental health suffers during the exams and that they have trouble sleeping in that period. More than half of them stated that they would like to get help or advice to deal with their stress and support their kids.

So, if you are a parent feeling pressured by your children’s tests: we hear you, and we are here to help. Here are some tips that will get all of you safe and sound to a good grade.

You Can’t Help with Exams Unless You Are OK

Before you start helping your kids with exams, you need to pull yourself together. You can’t help anyone when you’re stressed and anxious. As an adult, you need to objectively observe the situation and realize that there is no exam worthy of jeopardizing your and your children’s mental health.

Also, keep in mind that anything is achievable with practice, effort, and encouragement. If you still can’t keep calm, do your best to stay composed in front of your child. If they see you anxious, they will stress out even more.

Track Their Behavior

Children often don’t know how to express their emotions with words. And if you ask them how they’re feeling about their exams, they’ll probably say that they are okay, even if that’s not true. Children will show their frustration through changed behavior. For example, they will be easily irritable, they will not be able to sleep normally, and they will have trouble enjoying the things they normally enjoy. An extreme example would be engaging in self-harming behaviors.

Communicate with Your Child

While your child might have a hard time articulating their emotions, you should be able to talk to them and share your thoughts. First of all, explain that no pressure is coming from you. Sure, you want them to perform well, but it’s not a matter of life and death. Show that you have faith in them to demonstrate responsibility and knowledge, and offer your help with studying.

Work on Study Habits

Preparing for an exam is something a lot of kids leave for a couple of days before the event. However, if they’re attentive in class, work consistently, and build study habits with pretests, the exam will cause less stress.

It’s a good idea to make a studying timetable that outlines which subjects should be covered on which days. At the end of the day and the week, review the completed material and go over it together.

Encourage Healthy Habit

Losing sleep over exams can only cause a lack of focus and memory issues. That’s why it is imperative for kids to have a consistent bedtime routine and to get between eight and nine hours of sleep each night. This should be particularly prioritized on the night before the exam. A balanced diet can also boost brain capacity and improve memory. Some of the foods that help keep children’s brains sharp include nuts, seeds, apples, plums, oatmeal, fish, eggs, and greens.

Related: Six Natural Ways To Improve Your Sleep

Give Your Child Space

While you need to watch over your kids, help them, and encourage them, children need to have their own space where they can learn and practice without distractions. This room needs to be equipped with a comfortable chair and desk, as well as all the necessary learning materials such as books, notebooks, pencils, rulers, calculators, etc. Make sure there is enough natural light in the room, but equip it with task lights (table lamps) as well.

Talk to Their Teachers

Your kid’s teacher (or teachers) will have a good grasp of their knowledge and the areas they’re struggling with. Be involved in their learning process by occasionally talking to the teachers to discover how you can help. The fact that you are interested in their education will also motivate the kids to give their best, so it’s a win-win situation.

Free Time Is Important

We’ve already mentioned creating a studying schedule that will help your kids keep up with their obligations. However, you can’t expect them to sit in their room with their noses inside books all the time. Even more than grownups, children need their free time to enjoy the things they love.

Depending on their preferences, it would be best if they spend that time socializing or just being outside. But if they really enjoy watching Youtube and playing video games, they can also do that during breaks. The most important thing is that these activities are enjoyed during set breaks and don’t interrupt studying.

Final Word

Helping our kids succeed in school is important for their self-esteem and future. However, preserving mental health is even more important. This goes for parents as well. So, make sure the entire family gives their best to create an encouraging environment for the students preparing for their exams – but also keep in mind that those are just tests.

Spending 24/7 cooped up at home with family during Coronavirus has been…challenging for many of us, to say the least. Parents are forced to feel like they need to appreciate every moment of this time at home with their kids, while their own self-care is halted for the time being. DIY crafts to do while you’re home with the kids is a great way to occupy your kids with adventures while you have some wine and reality TV time. It’s not selfish to need some me-time, and while other family members can help out with these crafts, it might be a useful way for you and your child to bond in a productive day, while letting them burn out all that tiresome kid energy.

From outdoor adventures and pillow forts to art projects at home, there are tons of gratifying DIY crafts to do while you’re home with the kids during this unique time.

Tie-dye old clothes with food

If you’re not about using artificial colors, consider natural dyes like tea and avocado, which can turn your items pink. You can always swap garments for socks, hand towels, and napkins. This doubles as an interior design hack and a DIY craft you can complete with the kiddos.

Play restaurant

Since dine-in restaurants are no longer a thing, why not make a faux restaurant at home with the kids? Do a DIY menu with a mix of your favorite (and their favorite) dishes. If they want to be the customer, go for it, but we suggest having them act as the waiter while you and bae have a delicious dinner date night. Two birds, one stone!

Bake with the kids

This often sounds easier in concept than it does in reality, but we’ve actually found a solid amount of kid-friendly baking recipes to do at home that won’t result in a disaster. Consider something like these “banana bread” recipes. Feel free to change up the recipe and make it your own, by adding some of your kid’s favorite ingredients into the mix.

Make some homemade sprinkles

Making DIY sprinkles is just as fun as baking (and less messy), and they can be used for ice cream, cake pops, and more. All you need for this playful and easy recipe is piping bags, parchment paper, a baking sheet, and some ingredients to make royal icing.

Make your own playdough

Recreate the OG childhood favorite of kids all around the globe – playdough. This sticky and stretchy material is often too greasy, or too dry, but this recipe hits the middle ground just right, and all with ingredients that are already sitting in your pantry. Make a unicorn layered mason jar or a cute gift that your child can make for family members.

Create the perfect pillow fort

Whether it’s a no parents allowed, no boys allowed, or no girls allowed situation, pillow forts are the most snuggly facilitators of cozy and loving bonding moments. With a rope, clothespins, some sheets, and blankets, you can transport your family to another planet (or just the kids, if you need a break. Star decorations are optional but highly recommended.
