Returning to work after months during the pandemic can be daunting for staff members. Many people are experiencing high anxiety levels as they come back, worried for their safety and that of their families, especially as children return to school. Others are grieving the loss of a loved one while dealing with added personal responsibilities.

The pandemic is by no means over, and employee concerns are valid. Therefore, employers are taking steps to make the workplace a safe and stress-free environment by adhering to regulations and implementing the necessary precautions. Here, we discuss several ways to keep your workplace safe during the pandemic.

Provide Onsite Testing to Keep Workplace Safe During the Pandemic

One way to ensure that all employees on the premises are COVID-free is to implement a testing program to keep a workplace safe environment. Select onsite medical services that offer corporate COVID testing packages which can be conducted at your place of business. These services send friendly medical professionals to visit companies, where they conduct standard PCR tests or rapid antigen tests. Results are treated confidentially to respect employees’ privacy rights. The company follows all state and local public health COVID regulations to ensure staff and test subjects’ safety.

Regular testing is a preventative step that can put employees’ minds at ease and ensure they can focus on their jobs instead of worrying about catching COVID. Employers should counsel employees who are hesitant to get tested about the advantages of testing. Should they continue to refuse to test, alternative arrangements, such as working in an isolated area or remotely, can then be considered.

Identifying Weak Spots

Before opening their facilities, employers should conduct a thorough audit of their location and operations to determine when and where employees are at risk of a COVID infection. For example, retail store owners know that checkout counters place employees in a vulnerable position. Other weak spots in an employment environment include common spaces, such as break rooms and waiting areas.

Having identified these areas, employers must implement additional measures to prevent a COVID outbreak and to keep the workplace safe. These could include limiting how many people can be in common areas at a time or closing them altogether. Perspex screens that act as barriers between employees and the public should be installed, minimizing potential exposure to COVID.

Improving Ventilation

Since COVID primarily spreads through the air, an inefficient ventilation system can lead to infections as contaminated air is not effectively circulated out and replaced with clean air. A thorough assessment of a building’s ventilation is essential before welcoming employees back to a workplace safe environment.

Maintenance, repairs, or upgrades might be necessary to ensure the system works optimally. This includes increasing total airflow supply in HVAC systems and disabling on-demand settings that reduce air supply when reaching optimal temperature and room occupancy settings.

Where possible, employers should encourage workers to maximize fresh air usage by opening windows and doors to enhance air circulation through a building. This measure should only be implemented if it is safe and does not pose an unnecessary hazard to workers.

Reconsidering Your Office Layout

Physical distancing means that employees can no longer sit as close to each other as they did pre-pandemic. Many office spaces require configuration to accommodate social distancing for a workplace safe environment. This could entail changing the entire floor plan to maximize the space between desks. Plexiglass screens around desks to protect each worker should be considered when complete physical distancing is impossible.

The world of work has changed since COVID hit, and many people can do their jobs remotely. Employers should consider allowing this practice to continue if they cannot effectively implement distancing protocols among employees.

Emphasizing Employee Responsibility

Communication with employees is essential to maintain a safe workplace. Frequent emails and messages regarding COVID precautions should be sent to everyone, and signage throughout the building to encourage workers to abide by regulations must appear everywhere. Employers should provide employees with the necessary PPE (personal protective equipment), including masks and hand sanitizer.

However, none of these measures will be optimally effective if employees do not play their part. Employers need to stress the importance of each worker taking responsibility for the safety of themselves and those around them when implementing protocols designed to curb the spread of COVID.

It’s hard to argue that opening and maintaining a successful restaurant was difficult before the pandemic virus hit — now it seems impossible. However, don’t give up on opening a successful restaurant during COVID-19.

With so many stories of long-time successful restaurants closing due to the current pandemic, you might think that opening a new one is only a recipe for disaster. While it is certainly a risky move to make, the restaurant business is one of the toughest industries to succeed. With the right planning, safety precautions, and commitment, finally opening a successful restaurant, you’ve always wanted doesn’t have to wait.

Follow Solid Examples of a Successful Restaurant

One prime example of a restaurant doing it right and finding success can be found in Hong Kong. Black Sheep, a popular restaurant enterprise co-founded by Syed Asim Hussain, is currently doing very well thanks to their committed efforts to keep their customers and staff as safe as possible. To name a few safety protocols Hussain and his team have created and enforced during this pandemic, every Black Sheep restaurant is required to:

Make masks available and mandatory.

Provide hand sanitizer throughout the restaurant.

Increase sanitization efforts with an external agency deep clean every 10 days.

Create a Health Declaration form for customers to fill out and mandate temperature checks.

Set every other table to maintain distance between customers.

While many restaurants are closing, Black Sheep manages, and it’s partially thanks to their efforts to maintain a safe restaurant environment. Black Sheep’s COVID-19 guidelines aren’t just useful for them either. The business and its successful safety practices have been so effective that their guidelines have been picked up by Hong Kong government officials. Many of the internal guidelines from Black Sheep’s COVID-19 playbook are musts for all Hong Kong restaurants. The point co-founder Hussain especially notes, is to put safety before hospitality — at least for now.

While your restaurant is certain to face different challenges than those in Hong Kong, Black Sheep’s response is a great source to build an effective and successful foundation. While it can be tempting to hope things will return to normal by the time your restaurant is up and running, we still have no clue when that “normal” will return. Instead, work to address and adapt to the current problems you’re facing, even if you aren’t close to opening your doors quite yet. You’ll save yourself a lot of scrambling and stress later down the road.

Be Flexible with Your Ideas

When opening a successful restaurant mid-pandemic, it’s helpful to be flexible in your plans. While you might love the idea of starting your own brick-and-mortar place, it might not be the best choice right now. You have to consider the cost of renting a space and that overhead and the extra funds necessary to keep a large space as clean and COVID-19 free as possible.

A large space certainly leads to more opportunities to make money — more space means more seating. More seating means more customers; more customers mean more money, but it also presents more failure opportunities. Running at full capacity is also not a great idea right now and can even get you in trouble in some states.

With all of that in mind, it’s worth considering starting up a food truck. Of course, even a food truck still has overhead costs, and high-quality equipment isn’t exactly cheap. However, with a truck, you’ll have a lot more flexibility in how and where you serve customers. Food trucks are often held to much higher sanitation standards than restaurants, pandemic or not. You still have to keep in mind the high-risk customers. A food truck can be a viable option for those missing out on typical restaurant outings due to health concerns. This means, unlike in pre-COVID-19, a food truck could be better at reaching more customers than a dine-in one and potentially make you more money. All the COVID-19 precautions aside, you’ll still need a food handler certificate that is beneficial to any food truck business in ensuring all food safety and hygiene practices are observed during day-to-day operations.

If a food truck is not an option, though, then try taking a look at your to-go services. With limited seating for dine-in, you could make up for lost revenue by creating or enhancing to-go services. Besides your regular menu, offering to-go drinks like gourmet coffee and alcohol may attract more customers and increase foot traffic. You also don’t have to be an expert barista or mixologist either.

Learning to roast coffee beans or create signature cocktails is easier than you might think, and it’s a great way to bring in additional cash. It would also be a fun idea to add some simple, exclusive to-go menu items to really pique interest. You may not end up keeping the same services once the dust of COVID-19 settles, but for now, it could help make a positive difference in your revenue.

Don’t Be Afraid to Be Social

With so many people leaving their houses less often, you might struggle to get the word out about your new restaurant. Unlike in the past, when new customers would often wander into a new restaurant while shopping or doing errands, people tend to only go out with a particular purpose and place in mind now. To solidify your new place in the community, increasing your social media efforts is a must.

Currently, most businesses have a good reach online, considering people are scrolling through social media and using their phones a lot more now. From creating social-media-exclusive coupons and offers to implement a direct messaging system to sharing mouth-watering photos of your dishes, investing in your digital marketing can help catch the eye of more would-be customers. It’s also worth noting that major big-name companies like Disney and Coca-Cola withheld advertisements in a July boycott against Facebook. This could present an opportunity to buy ads on Facebook for a lot cheaper than you normally would.

Of course, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a walk in the park to run a business’s social media accounts. It takes a lot of planning, creativity, and commitment to be really successful in your social media efforts. Bringing on an experienced social media manager can help with this and take some of the pressure off your shoulders. While in the past, it was fair to question if you and your business even really needed a social media presence, living in these COVID-19 times, it now could mean the difference between success and failure.

Opening a successful restaurant during COVID-19 presents a whole new world of unique challenges. And while this pandemic situation isn’t forever, the things you learn during this time with likely be invaluable in the future. When in doubt, try looking at other restaurant success stories to keep you feeling motivated and ready to conquer whatever curveball the future throws next.

Coronavirus pandemic has caught everyone, both employers and employees, off guard. The best solution to stay safe and protected was to work from home for a while. Working remotely not only gives employees the flexibility they need but also helps businesses stay afloat. Most employees prefer this work arrangement as it helps them balance their work and life perfectly. However, working parents struggle with an unexpected transition. When they worked from an office, keeping a job and private life was much more comfortable than now. Trying hard to manage it all leaves enough room for burnout, stress, anxiety, and frustration. Here are a few tricks on how to manage working remotely and family life without going crazy during this challenging time.

Settle into a Daily Routine

Many psychologists recommend having some kind of daily routine to eliminate stress. Despite the pandemic and isolation, you can still follow a routine and feel better. Like most people, you probably had some pre-work habit when you went to work every day. Don’t let working from home get you out of having proper breakfast or a cup of warm coffee in the morning. Besides, now that you no longer commute, you have more time to get ready physically and mentally for work. With a few tweaks here and there, you will settle into a new daily routine in no time. As a result, you will be fully prepared to face all challenges the workday brings.

Stay in Touch with Coworkers

Working remotely comes with challenges of its own. One of them is employee communication. No matter how hard employees try to communicate, the distance somehow gets in the way. However, with the latest communicative technology, this doesn’t have to be the case anymore. Although equipping employees with necessary tools puts a strain on the budget, it’s nothing compared to all benefits the employer reaps. If they want to weather the crisis, it’s the price they have to pay. Today, managers can choose from a wide array of communicative tools and platforms. Tools such as Slack, Instant Messaging, and Zoom prevail in most cases.

On the other hand, you and your coworkers can also use intranet solutions to store and share data, work together regardless of the distance, and chat. Managers can streamline the workflow as effectively as they would in the office, so all operations run smoothly. Besides, staying in touch with coworkers will help you overcome the transition easier and get used to the new work environment.

Lay Down Some Guidelines

Managing to work remotely and family life demands high organizational skills. Now that your house has become your workplace, laying down some guidelines seems like a good idea. When you decide on the ideal place for your home office and schedule, share them with your kids and partner. Make them understand that if the door on your home office is closed, you’re working, and they shouldn’t interrupt you. When they’re open, you’re free to give them your undivided attention. It’s crucial to communicate whatever rules and schedules you come up with to your family members. They can plan their day around your timetable and workload. It allows them to run errands or get something else done. Also, they’ll respect the boundaries you set and give you the space you need to focus and deliver at work.

Live In the Moment

Experienced remote workers often say the key to managing work and family lies in living in the moment. This means that you should focus entirely on one thing at the time instead of thinking about what’s yet to come. For example, if you are working, then focus all your attention on completing the task. Don’t think about the pile of laundry you have to do later. When you’re having a lunch break, take some time to savor the meal. The same goes for your kids. If you’re playing with them, then be present, enjoy the activity, and don’t think about work. No matter how stressful it is, working from home gives you more time to spend with your family, which is what everyone needs right now.

Make Time for Family Activities

Despite all the work you have to do throughout the day, you have to make time for your family. You can come up with a reward system for yourself and your family members. For example, if they follow all your guidelines, you can have a family night. This means you can play games, watch movies, or cook together. Whatever activity you as a family agree on doing. These family activities are a great form of relaxation for you too.

After a long and busy day at the home office, you deserve to relax and get your mind off work. There’s no better way to do so than to spend some quality time with your family.

Even in the world we now find ourselves living in, the big question remains: how can we naturally become healthier people? With health at the forefront of everyone’s mind, it stands to reason that we would want to know the best ways to keep ourselves from getting sick. There’s plenty of drugs one can take, but people who wish to treat their bodies a little better aren’t without options. Taking care of yourself naturally might be easier than you think. Here are some natural ways to improve your immune system.

Continuing to Physically Distance

With COVID-19 still a top concern, it’s important to note that the only proven way to prevent and stop the spread of coronavirus is to distance yourself from others physically. The other tips will improve your immune system for other diseases, but nothing will beat physically, staying away from germs and infections as much as possible.

Prioritize Probiotics in Your Diet

One of the more recent discoveries in medicine is how vital your gut’s bacterial makeup is for your overall health. It’s crucial for your intestinal and stomach health, and having good gut health has even been shown to help you lose weight. Also, your mental health and brain functions rely on a healthy gut climate. Eating fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut can improve your gut microbiomes. If sour foods aren’t your thing, taking a probiotic supplement can be an easy way to get that all-important healthy gut.

Get Your Body Moving More

Yes, exercise is incredibly important to a healthy body, but it doesn’t have to be a slog to work through every day. Even moderate exercise can reduce inflammation and regenerate important cells related to your immune system. It doesn’t have to involve high-impact workouts or lifting huge weights, and you don’t need to exhaust yourself to see benefits ultimately. The important thing is to move your body, especially if you have a sedentary job. Even something as simple as getting a massage can have enormous benefits for your immune system.

Shut Down Early and Get Proper Sleep

Everyone sleeps, and it takes up almost a third of our lives. However, it’s not as simple as just getting more sleep. Good sleep quality is what you want to shoot for. Setting a schedule for when you sleep and wake up helps your body develop your circadian rhythm, which leads to deeper and more restful sleep. Also, limiting the time you spend in front of screens before bed can improve your sleep, as the blue light from TVs, computers, and phones have proven detrimental to sleep quality.

We often forget about the simplest things when it comes to our health. Using these natural ways to improve your immune system isn’t just safe and good for you; they’re also easy to do every day. Our health is sometimes all we have, so we need to make sure we protect this most vital part of ourselves for years to come.

The weather might have been beautiful this summer, but most of us have been stuck inside. As if having summer taken away wasn’t enough, many people have lost their jobs, and social distancing has left many people with depression during COVID-19- feeling overwhelmed, lonely, and hopeless.

Even though this despair is temporary, at times, it doesn’t feel like that. We’re not sure when life will get back to normal, but in the meanwhile, dealing with it through binge-eating or drinking too much will only make that downward spiral worse. To combat those negative feelings, in the meantime we’ve come up with 6 coping mechanisms to deal with depression during COVID-19.

Find Some Form of Physical Activity

When all else fails, get the endorphins going. Although we all respond differently to depression during COVID-19, a structured home workout might make you feel good and provide a sense of routine where there is none. However, if you have trouble sourcing that motivation, an outdoor exercise like rollerblading, biking, or jogging will help invigorate you without feeling too much like a workout.

For Depression During COVID-19 Get Outside

Instead of masking up at a crowded store and indulging in some retail therapy, do a hike with a rewarding view. Or, even just lay out in the sun on a blanket with a good book, if you don’t feel like being active. Soaking in Vitamin D and being around nature can help you release that internalized anxiety or depression and provide a healthy distraction, along with a real reminder to stay grounded.

Seek Out Sources of Familiarity and Comfort

Maybe it’s your mom’s Mac and cheese recipe, reruns of The Office, or some Youtube clips that make you laugh while you’re in the state of depression during COVID-19. It could just be snuggling up with your pet, or listening to your favorite songs. This act is kind of like hugging yourself. Remind yourself of the tiny moments of enjoyment in life, and the big picture won’t seem so overwhelming.

Connect with Others in a Genuine Way

Catching up over small talk can help you meet your daily quota of human interaction, but is it connecting with someone? During COVID-19 use your support network and get your loved ones to listen to your struggles when you’re experiencing depression. Opening up and being vulnerable is never easy, but it is incredibly courageous to do and makes it feel more comfortable to reach out for help the next time. Opening up about your troubles does not make you a burden – it deepens your bond.

Eat Mood-Enhancing Foods For Depression During COVID-19

While eating comfort food or McDonald’s might make you feel right at the moment, you’ll crash eventually and feel even worse than you did. Try to consume healthy and fresh foods filled with omega-3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients. Think roasted salmon and wild berry salad. It still sounds pretty decadent to us!

Staying informed is essential, but so is taking care of your mental health and taking a break. Consider unplugging from social media and the news at least a couple of times a week, so that you don’t start obsessively checking for updates. There’s loads of misinformation out there, and educating yourself with it will breed even more misinformed fear. You can always check conspiracy theories on Snopes.

Battling depression during COVID-19 can be difficult to manage. Recognizing the “triggers” will help you make the lifestyle changes that are required to get you out of those “blues”.
