The Sound of Happiness is Pop, Pop… Popcorn

Hot, fresh and fluffy. Popcorn is a puffy dream, and so much more than just a movie theatre snack.

When you hear the word, what pops into your head?

Greasy bags of salty yellow pieces? Soggy kernels drowning in butter? At the theatre, this is what you get and there’s nothing good about it. Unhealthy and unsatisfying. It’s a lot of oily calories and clogged arteries that makes you wish you could scrub your stomach and rinse your esophagus.

This is not the kind of popcorn I am talking about.

I’m talking about plain white delicious, airy air-popped popcorn.

When prepared simply, it’s a healthy snack and a great alternative to chips and nachos.

Without those dirty dressings (excessive salt and butter), popcorn is actually good for you.

It is naturally low in calories and fat and a high source of antioxidants and fiber. It even contains a bit of magnesium and potassium.

Believe it or not, this is a treat that has been enjoyed by humans for many centuries. According to National Geographic, people have been popping corn for over 6,700 years! Evidence found in Peru suggests that popcorn was once made by wrapping cobs in material and roasting them over open flames, or in an earthen oven.

Popcorn is a healthy, delicious and nutritious snack with Ancient roots. Pop it fresh with a frying pan or sauce pan (and a lid), or using a popcorn maker. Once you have made this light snack, there are dozens of ways you can dress it up to add a little zest.

Top it Off

Butter is a no go if you want this snack to stay healthy. But there are plenty of healthy options to season popcorn and give it some flavour. Here are some ideas for healthy, low-to-no calorie popcorn toppings and seasonings.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Coconut Oil
you can use these types of oils to cook the popcorn, and if so desired, pour a drizzle over the popped snack, but not too much! Oil is very high in fat
Ground Dill
Italian Seasoning
Ground Ginger
Garlic Salt
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Sea Salt – just a touch
Nutritional Yeast – has a slight cheesy flavour
Cayenne Pepper – if you like spice and want to boost your metabolism
Chili Powder – for added spice and a rockin’ metabolism
Curry Powder – warning, expect yellow hands after eating popcorn coated with curry powder
Turmeric Powder – warning, expect yellow hands after eating popcorn coated with turmeric

Now get popping!
