Here Are The Best Rooftop Patios in Montreal

Patio season couldn't come soon enough. Montreal has some epic spots for patio dining.

Rooftop Patios Montreal

One of the things I love most about Montreal in the summertime is the sprawling patios (otherwise known as terrasses) that take over the city. While I’m undoubtedly happy sipping on sangria on a patio on Saint Denis Street, there’s something pretty amazing about enjoying a cocktail with an impressive view. When that’s what I’m after, I visit one of Montreal’s many rooftop bars. Boasting views of downtown Montreal, the Saint Lawrence River, and historic Old Port, you can’t go wrong by spending an afternoon on any one of the rooftop patios below.

Terrasse William Gray

For an unbeatable view of Montreal’s Old Port, the rooftop terrasse at William Gray is for you. With the addition of La Grande Roue de Montreal (otherwise known as the city’s new observation wheel), the view from William Gray is now even more Instagram-worthy. Offering breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner, you can munch on anything from a charcuterie plate to a flank steak as you’re sipping one of their inventive cocktails. Tip: plan a trip to one of the International Fireworks Competition nights and you’ll have a prime spot for all of the action.

Terrasse Place D’Armes

Above the Place D’Armes Hotel and overlooking one of Old Montreal’s most scenic squares lies Terrasse Place D’Armes. This rooftop patio is one of my personal favourites, offering breathtaking views of the Notre Dame Basilica, Old Montreal, and downtown, as well as yummy cocktails (you have to try their refreshing raspberry mojito – the house specialty!). Terrasse Place D’Armes is open daily in the summer, rain or shine, thanks to the partially covered roof.

Tokyo Bar

Popular with Montreal’s student population, Tokyo Bar, while known for its specialty clubbing nights, also has a pretty great rooftop terrasse to enjoy in the summer. This vibrant locale has live DJs and an expansive patio with views of the trendy Plateau borough. Plus, its convenient location on Saint Laurent makes it an excellent spot for a quick pre-drink before hitting the clubs. Open from May until October between 10:00 pm and 3:00 am, and also for special events during the day such as the Grand Prix, Tokyo Bar’s rooftop patio is a great place to get the party started.

Terrasse Nelligan

If you’re into people-watching and delicious Caesars, this Old Montreal staple will never disappoint. Located on Saint-Paul Street West, Terrasse Nelligan boasts a spectacular view of Montreal’s most historic neighbourhood, with the Notre Dame Basilica on one side and the Saint Lawrence River on the other. Now offering brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hour, we recommend making this a regular stop on your summer patio list. Terrasse Nelligan is open for the season as of May 4, 2019.
